Fire on the Eastern Oregon Burned Crew and Ship at Percival's Wharf
A fire on the steam ship Eastern Oregon, docked at Percival's wharf, trapped about 26 crew officials and caused a chaotic escape. One body, likely the third cook Charles, was recovered from the forward section. The vessel, 200 feet long and 1,400 tons, built in 1883, valued at $125,000, burned after a paint store of 400 pounds ignited amid repairs. Firefighters used 5,000 feet of hose, the wind fueled the blaze, and most crew lost personal effects. The ship, previously City of Palatka, was on the Tacoma to Whatcom run and insured.
