Stewart of Pennsylvania Defends Tariff Distribution Policy
In a March 18 1844 House speech Mr Stewart argues against rapid passage of the distribution bill. He condemns the administration for postponing debate, warns that land proceeds belong to the states, cites Jackson Van Buren views, and attacks tariff repeal plans as harming American farmers and mechanics while benefiting Britain. He urges testing public opinion and warns of widespread economic harm from reduced duties and increased imports.
