As the American Tract Society approaches its semi centennial anniversary public attention centers on its work. Secretary Rev G L Shearer reports annual issues exceed 10 million papers including volumes with 60 000 evangelical publications daily and nearly 2 000 volumes. The society employs 5 000 laborers and last year 220 made about 1 000 visits each carrying religious conversation to 140 000 families. Colporteurs have made over 11 million family visits in thirty years. Past year costs reached 50 000 with 60 000 000 pages granted valued at 45 000 and papers sent to China India Greece Italy Spain and Brazil in 143 languages. Since formation the society has spent 600 000 supporting American missions.
The House passed a civil rights bill establishing that all persons within U S jurisdiction are entitled to full and equal accommodations and privileges in public venues. It imposes penalties of 500 to 1000 dollars, specifies court enforcement nationwide, and covers juror eligibility and Supreme Court review.
