The record lists Robert L. Case and others of the New York Security Life Insurance and Annuity Company indicted again on conspiracy to stall proceedings. It notes the Union League of America annual session in Philadelphia, Boston mayoral result, New York election canvass data, hotel fire deaths, bank receiverships, and indictments of Sherman Broadwell for fraud.
A conference of presidents from endowed colleges across states to meet in Columbus Ohio beginning December 27 to discuss university needs and push for additional land grant endowment funds. On the 11th the German-American National Bank of Chicago suspended payment and will liquidate with stockholders facing about a 50 percent loss. On the night of the 9th A S Special Bailiff George D Ellis and Thomas Moore killed each other near Liberty Kentucky. Ellis attempted to arrest Moore who was wanted on illicit distilling charges and Moore shot Ellis.
In a series of 19th century moves, the Turkish Council of State rules Christians may hold provincial governorships and admin posts. The British Parliament faces reproval up to January 10. The Turkish Parliament opened with a reserved speech, while France revealed a new cabinet headed by Dufaure. General and regional moves ripple across Europe as ministers face pressure and potential reforms.
Mehemet Ali is replaced by Chakir Pasha as pressure mounts in Constantinople. Serbia declares war on Turkey on the 14th and occupies Topolinitza and Secanica near Nisch on the 15th. Osman Pasha's troops assault the Russian grenadiers at Vid River, fail to break through, and surrender after five hours of heavy fighting. Russian and Romanian forces enter Plevna at 3:50 PM, taking about 40,000 prisoners and 70 cannons. The siege ends with calls for peace as both sides face heavy losses.
From a Russian dispatch dated Dec 13 three thousand Russians died in the skirmish at Metchka where Grand Duke Vladimir’s forces repulsed Turkish assaults all along the line. Turkish commander Sulieman Pasha claimed gains but withdrew after seven hours of fighting and bombardment. A bullet grazed the czarina in this engagement.

Washington reports detail a serious personal altercation between Senators Gordon of Georgia and Conkling of New York during a Senate session over a nomination report. Gordon challenged Conkling’s influence while Conkling defended his actions. a possible duel was discussed amid efforts to settle the dispute amicably.
