Baltimore and surrounding cities report widespread strike action against the B and O. Troops, including 120 U.S. Marines and 850 troops from New York, are deployed at Camden Station and key points to quell crowds as violence and arrests rise.
July 21 Philadelphia militia under Gen Brinton arrived to back Sheriff Fife in arrest raids on strike leaders. Forces moved to Twenty-eighth street where strikers blocked the track. Troops fired on the crowd wounding many and killing several as the crossing fell under control by 5:30.
The mob attacked troops retreating to Butler Street and the U S Arsenal as fires spread across Liberty Street. 125 locomotives burned, multiple depots and offices destroyed, with 2,000 cars and vast infrastructure losses estimated up to 5 million dollars. Casualties include several soldiers and numerous civilians. authorities impose patrols and arrests as efforts to restore order proceed.
Gen Brown held talks with striking crews at the Pittsburgh outer depot and secured a promise to hand control to the General Manager while new workmen are sought. Freight trains remain idle along long yard lines as military units prepare for morning duty. On July 2 strikers controlled most western roads and halted trains on lines including the Ohio & Mississippi and Indianapolis routes. The mayor spoke to about 2,000 at the depot urging restraint to avoid property damage. By July 27 trains resumed except the Ohio & Mississippi.
In Chicago on July 24 the railroad strike spreads as switchmen begin the action and the entire road crews join. Major lines including Michigan Central Illinois Central Chicago and Alton Northwestern Milwaukee St Paul and others suspend freight operations while mobs threaten and violence erupts injuring several. police and U.S. troops arrive as crowds demand order.
The Postmaster General says West mail will travel via Great Western Railway to Suspension Bridge and New York Central to New York. Through mails on the Pennsylvania Road are halted. Pittsburgh holds large mail piles being moved to a suburban station. Buffalo has 36 hours without mail. B&O runs one westbound train daily. Ohio & Mississippi restricts to engines and postal cars only.
The 9 15 a m mail and express from Philadelphia could not proceed beyond Reading Pa and has returned. Tracks torn up a considerable distance from the depot at Reading. Railroad men told not to run trains until the line is clear.
A large crowd at the United States Hotel passes resolutions in support of rail strikers. Workers demand pay raises and urge a citywide work stoppage with saloons closed. A mass meeting ends in confusion as authorities move to curb unrest. Rail situation remains unchanged with guards on duty.
Scranton reports a twofold strike as firemen on the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Delaware and Hudson and Lehigh and Susquehanna Railroads quit work seeking restoration of 10 percent wage cuts. About 1500 workers from the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company join for higher pay.
In Scranton Pennsylvania on July 27 idleness rules along the Delaware Lackawanna and Western main line and at the company mines as floods rise. Officials try to operate the pumps but a striker delegation warns that touching them would endanger workers.
A committee of New York Central railroad employees met with Superintendent Toucey and obtained a pledge to restore the 10 percent wage cut by month end. The assurance calmed tensions, freight trains were assembled and departed without incident, and normal operations continued.
The Cincinnati, Sandusky and Cleveland line at Sandusky reports a strike inauguration today. The passenger train did not run tonight as workers wait for President to concede. he refused to make concessions.
Firemen and brakemen on Michigan Central in Jackson Michigan struck on July 25. The walkout ended by July 27 and trains resumed regular service. Jourer H1 reported the settlement and restoration of operations.
All quiet in Baltimore as trains on the Philadelphia Wilmington and Baltimore Northern Central and Baltimore and Potomac run regularly. Passenger trains on the Baltimore and Ohio connect to Washington and the West.

Railroad workers resist pay cuts. managers demand full restoration of terms. Passenger day trains operate. By July 27 General Manager Caldwell promised pay for time lost to strikes. Little Miami employees and 25 C C I crews reported ready to work.
In Lafayette on July 26 the city’s Wabash Road employees across departments notified Manager Hopkins they are willing to return to work.
The Lehigh Valley Railroad brakemen and firemen on the Easton to Mauch Chunk run struck this evening. Workers in the Wilkes-Barre area also walked out.
The Lehigh Valley and Lehigh and Susquehanna roads report all workers discharged and trains halted as officials announce immediate payment to dismissed employees.
