United Press report details packinghouse workers in Cedar Rapids Ottumwa and Waterloo continuing strikes. Waterloo Ottumwa and Cedar Rapids locals total about 9 000 to 10 000 of roughly 16 000 Iowa workers involved. Farrell funeral march signals tensions as talks debate offer to end walkout.
Shirley Temple, now married and a mother, protested a Rogers Bros Circus promotion that billed an elephant as "Shirley Temple featuring with Rogers Bros Circus." Her lawyer Grant W. Cooper warned this was unfair competition and an infringement on her well known name.
Clermont special report: The eighth grade presented Wilbur Minds the Baby at the high school gym Wednesday evening. Cast included Arthar Nelson, Sr Elbert Westptahl, Albert Schave, Virginia Nelson, Judy Swensen, Kathryn Larson, Wayne Olson, Gordon Larson. Intermission featured piano solos and duets. Sup t H Moore awarded certificates. Andine Vasby presented the class.
Los Angeles crowds packed the Coliseum for a sprint duel featuring Mel Patton, Lloyd Labeach, and eight top sprinters. Patton clocked 9.4 seconds for 100 meters, eight tenths under the record, but finished yards short on the wrong course. The mishap halted the tape and officials blamed unclear routing amid Olympic caliber events.
Fayette special reports funeral services for John McBride 79 who died at State hospital after a long illness pneumonia and heart trouble. Born in Ireland April 2 1865 he came to the U S at age four. He married Sarah Smuck in Hubbard Iowa 44 years ago and farmed in Hardin county. Survived by son Willis daughter Mrs Bessie Ellison a grandson four brothers and two sisters preceded in death by his wife and most of his siblings. Funeral Sunday at two from Belles Funeral Home Fayette with Rev W R Noland in charge and interment at Grandview cemetery.
U S Consul General Thomas E Wasson gravely wounded in Jerusalem by machine gun fire near the consulate while returning from a truce commission meeting. Two Navy Communications Unit members also wounded and evacuated. Wasson taken to Hadassah English Mission hospital. date of wounding not specified. Heavy fighting rages in the old city as officials note his bravery.
Local readers attended a half million dollar truck equipment show at the Des Moines Fair Grounds held Tuesday through Thursday. Dealers and the Des Moines Ford branch with Iowa Ford dealers organized the event. Over 2.5 million dollars worth of equipment including bodies trailers and reels was displayed drawing 15 000 truckers and fleet operators from Iowa. On Monday 1 200 tractor dealers gathered in Des Moines for a Ford meeting led by Lawrence Liebe of Iowa Motor Company who visited four days to promote the show. Officials called it the largest of its kind ever attempted in Iowa. COUNTRY CLUB MEETS AT STRAWBERRY POINT. In Strawberry Point the Country Club held a Wednesday afternoon meeting with twelve members and a superstitition read from the Lutheran Home for the Aged thanking the club for quill gifts. Mrs George Pousek welcomed as a new member with Mrs Axtell presiding.

Mrs. R. E. Schwerim of Sumner won $20 as first prize in a letter-writing contest conducted by Oelwein restaurant owners through the Chamber of Commerce. Bernice Carpenter of Strawberry Point took second with $40 and Helen M. Flaucher of Lamont earned $5 for third. The contest was open to non Oelwein residents and praised Oelwein’s shops, theaters, meals, and Chamber bulletin.
Lamont special report notes Mrs. Albert Halli died Thursday at University Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kruessel Funeral Home with Rev. R. Dikkers of Aurora officiating. Burial will be at Compton Cemetery. She is survived by her husband two sons Bob of Oelwein and Vardette of Lamont and four daughters Mrs. Henry Lee Edgewood Mrs. Ray Nading Fayette Mrs. E. D. Maulson Chicago and Mrs. Arthur Williams Garber.
Helsinki reports that a communist led barbor workers strike began after interior minister Yrjo Leino was removed by President K. Pansikiv in an extraordinary cabinet session. Parliament had Passed a censure vote three days earlier, forcing resignation under Finnish law.

John C. Virden director of the commerce department office of industry cooperation resigns after criticism over his daughter Zaphemia Virden taking a teletype operator job with the Soviet Tass news agency. He hopes reconciliation with his daughter and cited pressure from Rep. Crawford. Virden submitted resignation to Secretary Charles Sawyer amid family tension and public embarrassment.
In Oregon's presidential primary, Dewey leads Stassen has narrow edge from 60,395 to 473 with 1,291 of 1,861 precincts reporting. Rural counties boost Stassen, while Portland hints at a Dewey victory. A record turnout of about 540,000 ballots was cast in both parties. Dewey campaigns in Seattle and Sacramento. Stassen flies home to Minneapolis.
Two hundred fifty Socialists will have their annual coronation ceremony Sunday at 8 in the Sacred Heart church. A procession begins at 7:45 from the Sacred Heart school with scouts and students. Alberta Hernandez is the May queen with a court including Mary Jo Rogge and Georgiana Hintz. Attendants are Joan Meyer and Josephine Lee. The Rev Cocullive Sweeney will preach the sermon followed by Benediction.
Maynard high school awarded 37 diplomas in a Thursday night ceremony led by Rev. Homer J. Armstrong of Judson Memorial Church Minneapolis. Awards honored Jean Thiele and Donald Sieck for scholarship, Gordon Warnke for citizenship, with valedictory by Thiele and a woodwind trio finale.
Charles H. Pinch 64, operator and manager of Siegele Farmers Cooperative creamery near Waverly, dies after a heart attack. Funeral Sunday at 2 PM from Siegele Lutheran Church Bremer County. burial in Manchester City Cemetery. Survived by wife, son Carel, daughter Mrs Don Lesterbauer. Prominent in northeastern Iowa creamery circles. previously led Garber Creamery 1908 1916 and Fayette Creamery 1916 1938.
A local drive raises funds to send 36 Girl Scouts to summer camp at Clear Lake. A $1009 shortfall must be met to cover all costs. Plans call 43 scouts to depart June 13 with the remainder the following week. Committee members Gladys Kirkendall Lloyd Butler John Borland and Jake Levin solicit gifts at Borland’s Independent Shore office. Camp activities include swimming boating nature work and handicraft with qualified counselors and an experienced lifeguard.
