Russian expert to speak at Independence hall meeting

Buchanan County residents hear Dr. Dunnington tonight at 7 30 in the community hall Independence. He witnessed the 1917 Russian Revolution as one of three Americans at the first all Russian Congress of Soviets and narrowly escaped a firing squad. He later spent six months in Czechoslovakia after Hitler’s rise.

Independence special report: Buchanan county spelling contest at Independence high school crowned Anna Marie Joslin 13 daughter of Francis J Justin as oral contest winner. Zelma Wallis rural Washington No 4 won the written and was Anna Marie’s oral runner up. Joslin will represent Buchanan county at the state finals in Des Moines April Pronouncer Merrill Fink. Funeral Tuesday For Elkader Woman 87

Funeral services for Gunil Herbranson 87 will be held Tuesday afternoon at her Elkader home. She died Sunday morning after a stroke a week earlier. Rev. D J Stransjord will officiate with burial in Norway cemetery. Born on a Wagner township farm she later worked with a brother in business at Imwold and Preston Minnesota. She lived in Decorah, moved to Elkader seven years ago, and resided with sisters Emma and Johanna and niece Mrs Inga Glesne. A brother Thor died two years ago.

In Tallahassee hearings began on Governor Millard Caldwell's $590,000 libel suit claiming a Collier's editorial misrepresented his views and was defamatory and false. Caldwell is expected to testify on his own behalf in the trial.

American GIs Shot in Vienna Incident Froze Patrol

A young American soldier Pfc. Jack Grunden 18 of Portland Oregon was knocked down and shot in the back by a Russian guard near Vienna while an Austrian girl accompanying him was forcibly taken by 40 bayoneted Russians. U S Provost Marshal Col Bernard Hurless called the act deliberate and said the Russian side was clearly at fault. Grunden likely to lose an arm but expected to recover. Eyewitness Ernest Reed reported finding Grunden unattended and the girl Elfriede Elias fled and told how the patrol was overwhelmed.

Coast Guard Rescues 21 From Grounded Norfolk Off NC

Coast Guard braved towering seas to rescue 21 men from the storm battered motorship Norfolk aground on a North Carolina sand reef.
