In Fayette residents split over a $98,000 gymnasium and classrooms vote. Citizens like Belle Green and Elizabeth Dickinson weighed immediate benefits against waiting for more donations and lower lumber costs.
The Iowa State Board of Control praised a new inmates led Alcoholics Anonymous chapter at Fort Madison Penitentiary as a major rehabilitation step. The 1,088 inmate population includes 176 lifers and one death row case.
The British monarchy announced a four month tour to Australia and New Zealand early next year. King George VI Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose will lead the trip with Prince Philip not accompanying the royal party to the dominions.

Washington authorities oppose a plan to write an anti communist military alliance into the European recovery program arguing it could force US into war without congressional approval. Senators Connally and George warn final say on war decisions rests with the United States. The Ball amendment seeks a veto free supreme council to halt aggression, drawing GOP criticism. Next week Senate action possible as Congress adjourns for weekend.
Mrs Clarencé Wilhelmi of Arlington visits Oelwein after returning from Des Moines where she saw her son at the Veteran's Hospital recovering from a major operation and awaiting a Monday morning procedure. She previously stayed in Joliet Illinois with her husband, who has been ill since January 4 at St. Joseph's Hospital after a broken leg injury on November 10.
In Port Arlington area near Dublin, three Irish workers aided by rabbits uncovered a hoard of gold coins believed buried during Cromwell's 17th century invasion. The haul, dated to 1651, was found near a wooden box. three finders received 1200 dollars each for surrendering the coins to the national museum.
Helsinki reports that the Finnish social democratic party repelled a communist bid to win workers support for a military alliance with Russia. Only one of five meetings approved the communist resolution. other meetings voted against the pact as parliament backs open friendship talks but not a military alliance.
Claude Ridge longtime Birdsell's barber shop employee died early today at his Sumner residence after a three month illness. Survived by wife and two sons one in Sumner and one in the navy in California. Funeral arrangements not yet set.
Fayette County supervisors adopted a tax equalization plan after a meeting at the West Union courthouse. The Des Moines appraisal firm Hall & Co. will begin work immediately, with maps and materials to be prepared next week. Officials say the program could become mandatory by state law and modernize taxation for fairness and efficiency.
The local D A V chapter led by Dr J W Feld joins 56 chapters in broadcasting a two hour program from 2 to 4 p m at station KXEL to celebrate the department radio broadcast anniversary. Sacred Heart School sextette and KXEL entertainers perform with Ned Richards organizing the hospital event and a D A V Auxiliary tea for guests.
Adolph and Edna Erickson in NOPENING Minnesota welcomed three girls, increasing their brood to 17. The 43-year-old mother and 47-year-old father, both with low wages, face housing strain in a four-room home. Names for the newborns are to be chosen by Edna.
Four high school students won prizes in a Rotary club essay contest on Elkader and how to improve it. First prize went to Bill Colvin for Elkader Town and City. second to Michael Roach. third to Jack Edwards and Kathryn Crary, each prize five dollars. Twelve entries were received and prizes awarded at the Rotary meeting on Tuesday evening March 9.
City officials heard Illinois public health expert Jack Sieg compare costs and benefits of pools. He favored smaller designs with wide sun decks, noting a smaller pool near Glen Ellyn yielded profits of 15 000 to 20 000 dollars yearly, while larger ones drained city finances.
Announcement at 2:00 pm says the Waterloo tournament is canceled due to the storm. The Oelwein Waverly game scheduled for 9:30 pm tonight is postponed.

Eight inches of snow fell in Oelwein during the past week with seven inches on Tuesday and one inch on Monday. High temperature for the week was 45 degrees and the low reached 7 degrees.
Oelwein merchants showcased ultra smart new fashions at the Salute to Spring event held in the high school auditorium drawing a capacity crowd with over 100 turned away. Models from Connor's Ross Company J C Penny Ritchie's Lundberg's Linda's Harold's Smart and Thrifty and The Children's Store displayed spring outfits for all ages while Shirley Simmons Florence Walker Yolanda Sparana and Margaret Bushee created makeup looks.
