Iowa Power and Light sets record demand in Des Moines
Iowa Power and Light Co. reported a record peak electricity demand in Des Moines on Monday as hot humid conditions drove air conditioner use. The peak reached 970 megawatts in the late afternoon, far above last summer's 944 megawatts. The previous one hour peak was 955 megawatts on Aug 21, 1975. Waterloo AP reports witnesses in the Cedar Falls murder trial testify that Thomas OConnell, 21, beat his wife Carole, 19, before her death on March 23. He is charged with killing Carole and their 7 month old daughter Coleen. bodies found in a mobile home fire. Autopsies show Carole strangled, baby died of smoke inhalation. OConnell worked at a local factory when the fire was found and was arrested a week later on two murder charges.
