Steel Firms Only Holdout On Coal Pact

Washington report says John L. Lewis led coal industry signatories to a new wage agreement taking effect July 1. Begin Draft Registering In 6 Weeks

Local draft boards will begin registering men within six weeks and the first draftees may be in uniform by late September officials said. The 19 through 25 draft law signed by President Truman created Selective Service machinery, with a proclamation due soon and Maj. Gen. Lewis B Hershey likely named national director. Inductions could start Sept. 22 under a 90 day clause, barring a national emergency. Enlistments for 18 year olds begin now with one year active service and six in reserve to avoid a 21 month draft. Details on camps and openings will be disclosed by Army Secretary Royall Monday.

Streamliner City of Los Angeles Derails Near Rand Island

A Union Pacific Streamliner derailment near Rand Island Nebraska derailed five rear sleeping cars of the City of Los Angeles. No serious injuries reported though one unidentified man was hospitalized in Kearney. The derailment occurred about 1:30 a.m. CST, 20 miles west of Rand Island, cause under investigation.

Davenport Firm Wins Case Over County Warrants

Vieth Dur Can and Wood, Davenport brokers, were awarded 100069.03 in a lawsuit against Fayette County. The plaintiff alleged the county board of supervisors and the county auditor issued emergency bridge fund warrants, with payment promised later, but the defense was rejected. Judge W W H Antes ruled for the plaintiff.

Man Fined After License Suspended in Iowa Case

Robert C. Steil of 20 Westgate was fined $30 in Buchanan county district court after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. His license remains indefinitely suspended and may be renewed only after an appeal hearing. It is believed to be the first case of its kind in Iowa under the new motor vehicle law.

374 Pacific War Dead to U S Return

Six hundred seventy four Pacific War dead from the Midwest will be returned to next of kin in July or August. The Army quartermaster office announced the bodies will arrive in the United States June 28 aboard the transport Morris BE Crain in San Francisco. The group died in Lingayen Gulf invasion and the battles for Baguio and Balet. Originally, they were buried in Santa Barbara cemetery in northern Luzon.
