Washington report says John L. Lewis led coal industry signatories to a new wage agreement taking effect July 1. It includes $1 daily wage raise per union worker and 10 cent per ton rise in operator contributions to welfare and retirement funds, totaling 20 cents per ton, with all other terms from the 1947 pact remaining, save for U. S. Steel Corp not signing due to the union shop provision.
Kerwin's men's clothing store on North Frederick begins remodeling including a new front and interior overhaul. Display windows removed for a long floor to ceiling pane angled from street front to glass door, adding six feet of front space. Construction is expected to last three to four weeks.

Local draft boards will begin registering men within six weeks and the first draftees may be in uniform by late September officials said. The 19 through 25 draft law signed by President Truman created Selective Service machinery, with a proclamation due soon and Maj. Gen. Lewis B Hershey likely named national director. Inductions could start Sept. 22 under a 90 day clause, barring a national emergency. Enlistments for 18 year olds begin now with one year active service and six in reserve to avoid a 21 month draft. Details on camps and openings will be disclosed by Army Secretary Royall Monday.
A Union Pacific Streamliner derailment near Rand Island Nebraska derailed five rear sleeping cars of the City of Los Angeles. No serious injuries reported though one unidentified man was hospitalized in Kearney. The derailment occurred about 1:30 a.m. CST, 20 miles west of Rand Island, cause under investigation.
Vieth Dur Can and Wood, Davenport brokers, were awarded 100069.03 in a lawsuit against Fayette County. The plaintiff alleged the county board of supervisors and the county auditor issued emergency bridge fund warrants, with payment promised later, but the defense was rejected. Judge W W H Antes ruled for the plaintiff.
The Weather Bureau reports five day outlooks in Iowa with temperatures about three to five degrees above normal and rainfall of one to two inches. Showers likely tomorrow night and again Monday and Wednesday. Tonight’s lows 62 to 66 and tomorrow’s highs 82 to 85 across the state.
Patricia Ann Diesburg aged 14 months died when a truck driven by her father Edwin Diesburg an Ionia oil dealer backed over her in what authorities called a tragic accident.

The closure threatened 2,000,000 Berliners in Allied sectors with starvation and pressured Western powers to withdraw troops and civilians. Hope rises that lifting the blockade eases Berlin crisis, though Moscow may still resist full control.

Wayne Masters or Veiwein faces reckless driving charges in justice court after a late night accident on South Frederick Avenue in front of Clydes Cafe. Police said the car was driven recklessly and overturned. no injuries were reported.

The Iowa delegation swung to Thomas E. Dewey as the Republican convention progressed. On the first ballot Iowa split 13 for Stassen, five for Taft, three for Dewey, and two for MacArthur. On the second ballot Dewey led with 13 votes, Stassen seven, Taft two, and MacArthur one. Individual shares were not public, but MacNider reportedly backed MacArthur, while Spangler and Ran stayed with Taft.
Mrs. J. E. Dippo died at 2 p m today at her home 42 North Frederick after a lone illness. Surviving besides her husband is a daughter Mrs. George Fox of Manchester. Funeral arrangements are to be charged to Hintz Funeral Home.
Robert C. Steil of 20 Westgate was fined $30 in Buchanan county district court after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. His license remains indefinitely suspended and may be renewed only after an appeal hearing. It is believed to be the first case of its kind in Iowa under the new motor vehicle law.
Six hundred seventy four Pacific War dead from the Midwest will be returned to next of kin in July or August. The Army quartermaster office announced the bodies will arrive in the United States June 28 aboard the transport Morris BE Crain in San Francisco. The group died in Lingayen Gulf invasion and the battles for Baguio and Balet. Originally, they were buried in Santa Barbara cemetery in northern Luzon.
