In Portland Maine Rep Margaret Chase Smith led the Republican primary for the U S Senate. With 529 of 620 precincts counted she held 49164 votes versus Gov Horace A Hildreth 25374 former Gov Sumner Sewall 16874 and Rev Albion P Boverage 5436.
DETROIT The Chrysler corporation announced price increases for all Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler and DeSoto models. Plymouth prices rose retail while Dodges increased by 15 dollars. Chrysler division prices climbed three to six percent or 75 to 125 dollars, and De Soto models were raised 79.25 to 131.75 dollars.
The Legislative Yuan voted 344 to 50 to approve U.S. conditions for a 400 million dollar aid program to China. Foreign Minister Wang Shih-Chieh urged acceptance saying the amount, while not large, marks the start of American economic assistance to China.

She retired after hotel work in Iowa and Wisconsin and 26 years at Globe hotel in West Union.

U S district judge ruled in favor of John Lewis in the pension eligibility dispute over the 1947 welfare fund for miners. Fred Tibbits aged 75 died at 11 45 am Monday from a self inflicted bullet wound to the temple coroner Dr I W Whitmire said he was found in the wood shed at his Sumner home by sister in law Mrs Mary Fritz ill health was given as the reason Tibbits born March 15 1873 in Townerville Wis came to Iowa at age 12 he married Minnie Ohlandorf of Boyd in 1902 who died in 1942 he served the City of Sumner as city marshal water and street commissioner and was a member of the Lutheran church he is survived by sisters Mrs Chris Schott Sumner Mrs Iva Oppice Tampa Fla and Mrs Henry Wihrmacher Waverly a brother Carl preceded him in death funeral Thursday at 2 pm at Berg chapel burial Fremont Cemetery west of town
Funeral services for Mrs Mason Stirk, who died Sunday, will be Wednesday June 23 at 2 p.m. at the Bapt Funeral home. Rev R L Ervin of the Christian church will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery.
The Girl Scouts and leaders returned Sunday night from a week at Magic Island near Clear Lake. They enjoyed boating swimming and handicraft with campfire programs each evening. Councilors included Mrs A A Kaskadden Mrs Mel Sabanek Mrs Helen Bloomfield Jill Hamilton and Gladys Kirkendall featuring many named scouts from Troops I II and IV.
Delegates to the General Council of Congregational Christian Churches approve a merger with the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Final union set after Jan 1, 1949, with canvassing to raise church backing from 65.5 to 75 percent. The convention of 2,006 delegates backs a United Church of Christ nearing 2,000,000 members.
Warden Percy A. Laifison of the state penitentiary urged the creation of a publicity bureau in Iowa City to inform the public about conditions inside the prison walls. He said transparency would help people understand penal work and reforms underway.
Funeral services for John Jen Ney of Waterloo will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St Marys Episcopal Church in Waterloo. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery at Oelwein. The body will rest at O Keefe and Towne Funeral Home at 415 Franklin Street until the hour of services.
A meeting of the National Guard is set for 30 p m Wednesday June 23 at the Coliseum for all members and others interested in joining. St Leonard Bizanti will attend to answer questions. The Iowa National Guard requires ages 17 to 34 with no service restrictions. Enlistments are three-year terms with possible discharge for hardship. Training is flexible with two hours weekly meetings and a 15 day summer encampment at Camp Riley Kansas in August.
Kenil New Jersey and Hercules California experienced twin nitroglycerine plant explosions. In New Jersey three workers were killed and two injured in a blast at 1:30 p.m. within a cluster of buildings. The same company suffered another explosion in Hercules near San Francisco, killing one worker and injuring two others while 200 escaped injury as the blast was heard across Contra Costa County.
Ruth Anderson and Mrs. Rosen, daughter of Mr. Anderson of Del Rene, will attend a busy Thursday in Hawk City. They will visit the Hotel and welcome the Queen and Swedish prince as part of the participation. A luncheon at the airport and a Hollywood stars parade appearance are planned. Special guest will attend the premiere motion picture with the stars in town.
Finance chiefs from Russia and the Western Allies met in Berlin for a four power conference. An outside chance was seen they might agree on a single currency for all Germany. The talks marked the first high level meeting since Soviet representatives walked out of the Allied control council. The outcome could decide Berlin's role in East versus West currency reform. The meeting suggested potential Soviet willingness to coordinate a postwar German currency plan with the other zones.
FAIRBANK Iowa Special report says a car driven by Robert Heilman struck a culvert near Jesup early Saturday. He and Laura Gallup of Independence were returning from Waterloo when the crash occurred. Gallup suffered a broken pelvis in two places and a head wound. Heilman had cuts and bruises but was improving and expected to go home soon. Heilman is the son of Rev. H. J. Feidmen, pastor of the Lutheran church in Fairbank, and Gallup is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Ross Gallup of Independence, a former resident of the community.

The statement, issued by the Fellowship of Reconciliation, binds members to refuse to participate in any war. Many members are conscientious objectors from World War II.
Washington reports the U S treasury surplus reaching a record level as tax payments flood in, lifting the annual in the black to nearly eight billion dollars. Officials note the year ending June shows a large positive balance and the figure may rise further with quarterly receipts.
