Parents must reaffirm role in shaping character at home
A local column cites Bernard Bell in the New York Times urging parents to reclaim responsibility for character, manners, morals, and religion. It notes schools overextend into total development, leaving youths with little time for traditional academics. In Oclwein adults discuss home influence, while Purdue University poll of 10,000 high school students reveals surprising results.

Suburbs of Portland Oregon swelled as Columbia river floodwaters breached a dike near a pumping station, flooding five miles of lowland areas and threatening homes, farms, and golf clubs. Army troops evacuated residents while sirens and sheriffs riders warned the public before President Truman’s flyover. Two climbers sought refuge on a roof before rescue by amphibious craft.
