A 28 day Palestine ceasefire opened amid rapid accusations as Jews and Arabs blamed each other for violations. Bernadotte ordered inquiries from Cairo as national observers arrived to supervise the fragile truce and assess both sides motives and compliance.
The Hazleton auxiliary held a county conference on Wednesday at 8 o clock. Present units reported the year’s activities and a memorial service was noted. National defense topics and remarks by department president Kay Hanson were discussed with attendees visiting Washington and Indianapolis. Everyone enjoyed a lunch after the meeting.

Senator Taft attacked President Truman before the Union League Club in Philadelphia, accusing him of discrediting Congress and warning of a centralized bureaucracy. Truman pressed flood control aid on a westward aerial tour as Republicans finalize convention delegate votes across the nation.
Zion Lutheran Brotherhood met with about 25 members. Al Kiel led with song, Homer Hall gave devotions, and Ted Wegner reported the treasurer's items. A $10 donation aided the mother-daughter banquet. The Sunday school picnic is set for June 27, and members will attend the Iowa District Brotherhood convention at Wartburg College June 12-13.
Mrs Ward Tupper 82 died Wednesday at daughter Mrs Fred Johnsons home. Funeral Saturday at 2 p m at First Methodist West Union with Rev Sterling J Baldwin officiating. Burial in West Union cemetery. Born Mattie Susan Gress Sept 1 1865 Moscow Penn daughter of Adam and Anna Gress. Married Ward Tupper Jan 20 1887. farmed near West Union. he died 1944. Survivors: three daughters Mabel Michelson Decorah Mrs Fred Johnson West Union Mrs Henry Hjelmeng Waucoma. two brothers Leon Gress Prairie du Chien Wis Claude Gress Clermont. three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Preceded by husband two brothers Joseph Willis two sisters Anna in fancy and Mrs David Bowser l and dive grandchildren.
Word reached that the body of Cpl John F Keegan has arrived in the states and will be buried Monday afternoon at the Catholic cemetery in Fairbank. Keegan, a Marine with the Fourth Division, was killed on Iwo Jima on March 7 1945. He is survived by his mother Mrs S A Smorawske and the late Chris Keegan and is a nephew of Mrs George Jardee John Ryan and Harry Regan of Oelwein.
Hazleton special report on the Be Natural 4 H club meeting at Marian Reiter home. Betty VanVooren spoke on daily care of clothes. Peggy Burke demonstrated sleeve setting. Marian Reiter demonstrated hair brushing. Judges Mrs Gardner and Mrs Morgan chose Mary Lea Schnepp as winner in the better grooming contest. Mary Jean Kiefer and Roberta Destival organized recreation. Take away bingo and lunch served by Mrs Reiter and Marian.
Eighteen boys and girls will make their first Holy Communion at St Mary's Catholic church Lamont on Sunday June 13. With one exception this is the largest class to do so. The High Mass will be at 7 30 a m.

Dayton Ohio reports Sgt Malcolm H McCready stole a B 25 from Wright Field and flew it to his hometown of Owatonna Minnesota. He was dishonorably discharged and sentenced to two years confinement by a court martial after landing safely April 4. Wright Field officials released the story.

Columbia river floodwaters broke a dike near a pumping station in north Portland flooding a five mile stretch of suburban and country club districts. Army troops and civilian workers evacuated as water swept over lowlands damaging homes farms and crops. President Truman planned to survey the area as sirens and rider alerts guided residents to safety.
The Moose Bar Scout Troop No 30 will receive its charter this evening at 3 o clock at the Moose country home. Twenty six boys are in the troop, organized two months ago. The Boy Scout council will present the program and tenderfoot badges to the boys.
Floyd W. Kerns of Oelwein was charged in justice court with O. M. V. 1 after an 8:36 nightcident on 628 South Fredericks. He, driving a 1947 Hudson south on Frederick, struck a 1928 Chevrolet owned by Robert Allen of Aurora parked on the west side. The Allen car sustained rear end and tail light damage and a ripped side of the body. Kern’s car had damage to the right front fender and hub cap.
Danish passenger ship Kjobenhava struck a magnetic mine off the Jutland coast early today. Authorities said 175 passengers and crew were missing, five bodies found, and rescue ships rushed to the scene. The vessel sank quickly after hitting the mine, with only two launches possible and hundreds unaccounted.

Funeral services are set for Monday at 1 15 pm at Denver Funeral Home and 2 pm at Zion Lutheran Readlyn for Mrs Will Taylor who died at 11 45 last night at her Readlyn home She leaves two sons Herman of Sumner Verner of north Oran a daughter Hulda Lehmkuhl of Readlyn two sisters Mrs Sophia Juditch of North Dakota and Mrs Emma Meyers of Sumner and one brother Will Nolte of Minnesota
Word arrived of Joe Toland death in Long Beach California. Cremation followed and his ashes were sent to Letts Iowa for burial. Toland and his family were longtime Maynard residents and he worked as a barber in Maynard and Oelwein.
