Eye Draft Exemption For Wartime Seamen

President Truman sought a legal method to exempt wartime merchant seamen from the draft under the new selective service law. Congress granted automatic exemptions for most World War II veterans but did not cover sailors who served aboard merchant vessels. Officials say 300000 to 400000 former merchant seamen aged 19 to 25 remain eligible for service.

Polio Subsiding in Western Iowa Says Health Official

DES MOINES Dr Ralph Heeren director of contagious diseases at the state health department announced that the western Iowa infantile paralysis outbreak is subsiding. Heeren said the epidemic has slowed in Pottawattamie Harrison and Woodbury counties which have accounted for about three fourths of the 236 cases. He noted a rise in other parts of the state but that western Iowa and perhaps the state as a whole may have burned itself out, with the peak usually in August and September.

Iowa Socialists Name Candidates for November Ballot

Des Moines reports the Iowa Socialist convention nominated Hugo Bockewitz for U S senator and named William F Leonard for governor and B A Donelson for lieutenant governor. About 20 delegates attended the Des Moines public library meeting. The convention urged action against the Unamerican Activities Committee, arguing America is in hysteria and police plate conditions are dangerous.

Funeral services for 87 year old Emma Scott were held at the Federated church in Keota Iowa with burial in Keota cemetery. She died at 515 am Sunday August 15 after living with her daughter Mrs Erdice and previously in Keota. She is survived by her daughter two brothers two grandchildren and one great grandchild. Former Treasury Aide Harry White Dies at 56

Harry Dexter White, 56, assistant secretary of the treasury from 1945 to 1946 and a key figure in a Washington spy hearing, died of a heart seizure at his summer home in Fitcilliam New Hampshire. He had served in government since 1934 and is survived by his wife and two daughters along with several brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held here Thursday.

Brownie troop number 7 spent the weekend at Backbone State Park for their first camping excursion. They gathered around a campfire, sang songs, roasted marshmallows, attended Sunday school, played games, did handiwork, then had a picnic supper and hot dog roast. Train derailment injures 28 near Rugby North Dakota

Official reports that 28 passengers were injured when the Great Northern Oriental Limited derailed five miles east of Rugby. Two passengers were in critical condition, including John Mekvold of Verona North Dakota and Lars Mollarid of Benson Minnesota. Eight victims were discharged after treatment at Rugby hospital.Officials cited rail equipment tests and diesel engine issues as factors in the accident.
