Oscar Curley of Dubuque Telegraph Herald dies in the Dubuque office. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon. Active in civic groups, he co chaired the Iowa Daily Press Association advertising advisory committee with Lew Warren for three years. Known in newspaper advertising, he chaired the IPDA advertising section clinic to be held in Des Moines next month attended by Oelwein staff.
Chicago reports the Republican party opened its Midwest campaign HQ for the general election with a forecast that the 20 state area will yield a record GOP vote. Insurance broker Howard Bert of Scotts Bluff was named assistant GOP campaign manager for the region and predicted 85 percent of the 20 state electoral vote would go GOP.
President Truman appointed Laurence A. Steinhardt as the U S ambassador to Canada succeeding Ray Atherton who moves to a role at the United Nations. Steinhardt previously served as ambassador to Russia Czechoslovakia and other nations and most recently held the post in Czechoslovakia.
Bob Swale, 18, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Swale of West Union, remained unconscious at West Union hospital after a motorcycle car collision Thursday about 5:45. His bike struck the rear of a car driven by Henry Smith of West Union near an oil station on highway No 150. Patrolman Pete Hall investigated.

The Stanley elevator was broken into between nine and ten dollars were stolen from the cash drawer. Entry was gained by breaking the office door lock and the cash drawer lock. A lock to Morgan's grocery store room was broken in an attempted entry but the main store remained secure. Sheriff Emory Hart of Independence is investigating the robbery.

Des Moines reports Gov. Robert D. Blue was asked to delay a decision on a 14.991 million flood control dam on the Chariton River in Appanoose County. A nine member committee urged more information and urged the governor not to forward reports until December. The plan would flood 18,000 acres across four counties and covers Mystic facilities.
Washington UP report says a defense department committee proposal to place the national guard under full federal control drew cool reactions from Sen. Bourke B. Hickenlooper and Sen. Elmer Thomas. Both lawmakers argued the move deprives states of troops for local emergencies and rejects governors’ authority to call out the guard.
General Clifton E. Gales announced at the Marine Air Station that recruitment of 5,500 last month was more than adequate as the corps already has 84,000 of an authorized strength of 92,000 men.

Des Moines reports Iowa feed lots contained 26 percent fewer cattle in August than a year earlier, with cattle on grain for under four months at 44 percent, four to seven months at 30 percent, and over seven months at 26 percent, indicating a short fed trend.
A Russian teacher, Oksana Kosenkina, 52, leapt from a Soviet Consulate building and was kept under guard in New York hospitals. Officials said she was a prisoner for days and described confusion around her removal, with police and Soviet officials debating admissibility and safety.
