Vegetable curiosity and a murder tale in Avon Springs area

A Livingston County eyewitness recalls a 25 to 30 inch stalk plant found yearly near Avon Springs between Caledonia and the State road. The site marks a Revolutionary era murder near a burnt camp, involving Private Alexander and Baxter, with Baxter jailed and Alexander believed killed by a Connecticut plant-linked stalk. The roots and a bright vine with purple berries are described as rare “man of the ground” used by Native Americans for medicine, with Red Jacket and Avon Springs noted for collecting it.
