Miscellaneous notes from New York and nationwide items. Mentions population trends in New York and Reading Pennsylvania, a New York mercanturing firm employing eleven Williams, a princess running a Fifth Avenue millinery shop, and various curiosities from politics, weather, and private lives. Pauline McCoy colored was hanged at Union Springs at ten for the February murder of Annie Jordan a fourteen year old white girl. The crime described as unparalleled in Alabama history, with McCoy wavering on motive and her father Jake McCoy briefly implicated.
Over a bushel of partly destroyed letters addressed to local business firms were found in the street. The letters were rifled of contents and scorched by fire before rain prevented complete destruction. A New York draft for 259 dollars drawn by Smith's Bank of Perry was found torn in two. The postmaster and police investigate suspected postal precinct involvement.
Two men forced entry at about two thirty this morning and dragged the night clerk Alf Pockerts from the post office. They searched parcels shipped from New Orleans and the East and from San Antonio and the West. The clerk remains unconscious and it is not yet known what money was stolen.

At a joint meeting of cracker bakers from Pittsburgh to the Rockies, it was unanimously agreed to raise cracker prices. The increase, from half a cent to a cent and a half per pound, takes effect tomorrow due to higher flour and lard costs.

The St Clair County grand jury indicted Clovis Soucy for embezzlement while serving as supervisor of Cakokia. He held the post from January until spring and is charged with appropriating 40038 pounds.
Dr. Alfred Williams a pastor of Antioch Colored Church in Edgewood Georgia was found in the woods with more than a hundred buckshot wounds inflicted by members of his congregation who opposed his tenure.

Catharine McMahan died in Greencastle Indiana aged 103. Born November 11 1738 in County Clare Ireland her maiden name was Flannigan. She immigrated to America in 1853 settling first in New Albany Indiana later in Dubuque and Bedford before moving to Greencastle in 1863.
In Los Angeles County on October 14 a tramp who sought work at Mrs Backett's home near Santa Fe Springs shot the woman in the neck. Neighbor W S Slocum rushed to help and fired twice. The tramp fled but Slocum returned fire and killed the assailant with a shot to the head.
The Wolverine Oil Company of Detroit struck a giant well on Boss Lawrence’s farm ten miles north of Findlay. The natural flow exceeds a thousand barrels per day and cannot be shut off. Tankage is being built rapidly as oil overruns the surrounding area.

Chesley Heal, aged 109, died at his home in Searsmont yesterday. He resolved over forty years ago not to work another day and spent the last twelve years confined to his house. Neighbors recall his powerful lungs and voice that could be heard for a mile.
In Wellesville Ohio on October 14 a farmer named McCoy reported thirty Merino sheep killed by dogs. The loss is near 205 dollars and may rise with recovery costs and animal replacements.

Reports from Enrg Pennsylvania on October 15 indicate the United States Fish Commission will assume control of the white-fish hatchery at Erie. The Pennsylvania State hatchery has produced about 1240 percent of fish annually for three years and this year the white-fish catch at Erie doubled due to propagation efforts here and at Detroit.
Cashier Tallman of the Traders' Bank of Chicago refuses to answer questions before the Master in Chancery. Attorneys for a large creditor allege President Rutter took 409000 from the bank in the past year. Judge Shepard has been appealed to compel the witness to testify.

Miss Carrie Miller of Lexington, South Carolina, died after poisoning herself with lye mistaken for wine. The family pantry held both liquids. she drank, cried out the fatal line, and suffered months of excruciating illness, sustained by artificial feeding as her stomach failed.
In Donaldson Schuylkill County at William Morgan’s house, six year old Willie Morgan fetched a shotgun from a closet and loaded it with a cap. He stood on a chair and fired toward his mother nursing a six month old, saying he would shoot. The blast struck the mother in the face and body and the infant in the back and head. both are not expected to recover.

Cascado October 16 The City Council passes the telephone ordinance recommended by the Committee on Licenses. It cuts charges from 125 to 35 for the first year 8 for subsequent years and 75 if a three year contract is signed.
Ten year old John Carroll was killed instantly near Midway Tennessee while playing near an operating cane mill. His head was crushed when caught between the lever and frame.
In Taylor Texas on October 15 Joe Joiner a colored man accused of attempting to assault a white girl was taken by a mob on the way to jail and hanged from a tree near Hulto. The sheriff had him under arrest when the mob seized the prisoner.
At Bishopsville South Carolina a two year old girl died after tripping on a rug and striking a trundle bed breaking her neck. Her thirteen year old sister, overcome by the tragedy, died of shock.
Washington reports the Treasury surplus at the close of business was 11,586,756 dollars, down from 85,000,000 dollars last Sunday, marking a drop within two days.

A water flask and cork experiment shows blowing harder pushes the cork out rather than into the bottle. The bottle is full of air, so additional air cannot enter. pressure inside increases and forces the cork outward. The explanation rests on air compression and remaining internal space.
