At 11 oclock yesterday flood waters broke levees south of Alexandria and swamped the town within an hour. Homes and streets are underwater three to six feet deep, residents seek upper floors. Business halted. Mississippi river distance seven miles away. Farmland in Missouri bottoms submerged about 73 000 acres, potential losses around 24 000. High winds opened Warsaw levee threatening 1 000 acres of Illinois land.
An iron tank holding 1508 barrels of oil two miles up Oil Creek was struck by lightning on Saturday. The tank toppled into the creek, igniting a second tank with 34090 barrels. The Keystone refinery nearby faces danger as dams are built to shield property. Owned by J. B. Smithman, thirty seven thousand barrels are insured.

A Santa Fe Thunderbolt train No 7% derailed at Fountain after a brake failure on a side track. A car loaded with naphtha exploded, burning the depot and several dwellings. Three killed, about a dozen injured, including two Fountain citizens and a tramp. Officials warned crowds away from the powder car.

Miss Sarah Mc Cummings of Port Deposit Maryland confessed to the mayor that fourteen years ago in this county she bore a child fathered by her own father. Three years later she bore another child also fathered by him, and both were murdered. She is locked up while detectives seek the father.
Frank May, a saw-mill worker near Port Republic, Virginia, was caught by a saw on a Saturday. His left leg was severed at the thigh, his side was cut open, and organs were damaged. He lived fourteen hours, suffered intense thirst, and remained conscious to the end as water poured from his wound.
Ozark Missouri reports four Bald Knobbers David Walker William Walker John Matthews and Wiley Matthews sentenced to hang for the murder of Wm Edens and Charles Green have appealed to the State Supreme Court. The appeal will be argued in the fall.
In Washington on May 11 Mr Neal of Tennessee offered a constitutional amendment in the House to extend the term of the President and Vice President to six years and to prohibit a second term for the President.
Geo Grim was found guilty and sentenced to eight years in the penitentiary for wrecking an emigrant train at Mc Gowans Switch in 1951. Wm Ealam was arrested earlier. his trial was postponed to the next term.
President Cleveland announced to Colonel Roel Thomas secretary of the State Grange that he will attend the Inter-State Exposition at Williams Grove in August.
At the Methodist Conference session on New Years May 15 Bishop Andrews chaired. Debates followed on organic union extending to the African Methodist Episcopal Church and broader Methodist boundaries. Dave Southall a Pointe Coupee colored man linked to an election aftermath killing near Bayou Grosse Tele was killed by masked men after deputies tried to arrest him. He had fled Iberville parish and was captured in Baton Rouge prior to the shooting.
James Taylor a drummer for a New York firm plunged from the fifth story to the ground floor. He clutched bannisters on each of the five flights, slowing his fall enough to land with minor injuries. Hospital/hotel staff say he was not strictly sober at the time.

Miss Clara Campbell known as Bunnie had sought to dismiss Charles Arbuckle appeal from a $45 040 breach of promise judgment for irregular service of papers. The General Term of the Supreme Court denied the motion today.
Knoxville Texas May 15 Engineer Green Burleson of the Knoxville and Jellico accommodation suffered severe injuries when his engine jumped the track at Newcomb rolling down an embankment. His right leg was crushed and he was badly scalded with doubtful chances of recovery.
John D. Harper of Davisville in Jackson County shot himself through the head with a .38 caliber pistol at H. D. Buttis residence on Sycamore Creek. The incident occurred yesterday morning and is considered accidental.
Advices from Baxter County Arkansas report a destructive tornado passing over the county a day or two ago. The storm caused heavy damage to farmers but no lives are reported lost. It crossed White river at Matty's Knob and did great damage there.
