A fragmented 19th century jumble reports varied items from New York and beyond including legal contests over wills, city hall budgets in Kroxvins Tennessee, high salaries for tea tasters in New York, long theater careers, new laws in Alabama on raffles, and a wide array of oddly phrased anecdotes about politics, aviation, crime, and local curiosities.
Judges Ewing and White announced decisions on Allegheny county liquor licenses for Pittsburgh after a lengthy hearing. About 218 of roughly 700 applicants were approved, leaving many saloons closed after May 1 as the city trims its public bars dramatically. The ruling triggers uproar among saloon owners and supporters, with Law and Order Society watching closely.
Thomas Akra, a tind soldier, rode in a small covered wagon from Osgood to Washington to seek his pension after Congressman Holman failed to obtain it. Akra is camped near Washixnetes. He learned at the Pension Office that four years ago a letter to appear before an examining board was sent to Lawrenceburg but never received. He has been examined and hopes for his pension in a few days, then will return home the same way.
Syracuse New York Western Division of the New York Central railroad laid off about 500 men yesterday. Superintendent Burrows issued orders laying off twenty freight train crews due to lack of business. The reductions are described as temporary and attributed to West strikes reducing traffic.
Mrs Mary Sharp of Wanomye was burning to death when a boiling whisky pot toppled, setting her clothes aflame. Three of her children who tried to save her were burned and will die. Her husband and father of the children, John Sharp, is reported to have become insane.
A worker named Williams was fatally injured at Pond Creek in Pankeaswacee West Virginia. While pulling a tie to ward off a strike, he fell forward and was struck on the head by a fellow workman’s falling pick, causing a fatal wound.

The Cellar river near Staxsean Louisiana rose high as a wagon load of men and boys tried to cross a small tributary. Four boys and the team were swept away and drowned in the surf.

Sham Mooniy Pa April 7 James Bailey of this city inherits 1 600 000 from an uncle in England. He and his seven children have lived in poverty after quitting the January Philadelphia and Reading strike. Bailey, once private secretary to the uncle, will sail with his family to England next week to take possession of the fortune.
A band of Catholic missionaries plans a journey from Mexico City to southern Mexico to convert the Lacandons, a 25 000 strong tribe in Campeche, Tabasco and Yucatan. They reportedly keep Aztec customs, including human sacrifices, and legends say a hidden city with temples and bazaars lies deep in Tabasco forests.
Sciotoville residents report a large black catlike creature terrorizing the town after dark. Described as the size of a shepherd dog, it roams the hills and town at night, preying on cats and inspiring fear among residents. A hunt party will be formed to track the animal.
Adolph Flinger, a 33 year old German, killed his money and valuables before setting his property alight. He told his dead wife had instructed him to burn all, kill their two children, and then himself. The children were away. he is now confined as a likely insane person.
Louisville April Rhodes and Benjamin Rhodes report a farmer near Vine Grove Kentucky killed last night. The bachelor lived with his sister who found him dead in bed this morning. A bloody axe near the wood pile is the only clew.
A five year old daughter of August Schwartz a prosperous farmer living on the Freeburg road southeast of the city died Friday afternoon from hydrophobia caused by a dog bite sustained a little over three weeks earlier.
Allen O. Myers was found guilty of contempt of court in the Franklin County common pleas and sentenced to a $25 fine plus court costs.
John Ritchie was accidentally killed by his wife while practicing with a rifle in their home garret in Patrisos New Jersey last evening. The incident is reported as an unintended shooting during a domestic setting.
The jury in the suit of Jacob Walborn administrator of Andrew Bolander’s estate against The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company awarded $5,252 for Bolander’s death at Garrett Indiana while crossing the track.

In the Brewswicketon area thousands of cattle were dehorned after Vietram exposure several months ago. Most recovered, but recently cattle on farms west of Bloomington are said to be in grave condition. About 100 animals suffered unhealed wounds and tissue mortification after dehorning conducted March 1.
Mr and Mrs J W Reynolds of Las Vegas were walking when a loaded revolver in his overcoat pocket discharged striking Mrs Reynolds from the left side. The ball passed through the heart and she died instantly.

At dawn on Tuesday in New York Ex Senator Roscoe Conkling was near death after an operation to remove a temporal bone portion to check for brain pus. The procedure succeeded but doctors fear for his life beyond forty eight hours.

Geo ONeill a respected Middletown youth in Frepenick Missouri was held on $100 bail to answer to a charge of hugging and kissing Miss Grace Young after an Easter Monday outing in which he had been drinking He admitted the act but said he acted only while intoxicated and would not have done so sober The Youngs and mother urged arrest and the case was set for the next term of court
New York grocer Thomas Scholes pleaded guilty to selling oleomargarine as butter. Recorder Smythe noted three previous suspensions and sentenced Scholes to three months in prison. Scholes tearfully lamented punishing a respectable man and urged harsher action against butter dealers to end the scam.
In New York on a school day, Annie Forster aged seven died after swallowing a toy balloon. After a post mortem, doctors ruled heart disease as the initial diagnosis, but the balloon remained lodged in her throat, causing fatal strangulation.
April 10 report from New York states Dr. Barker consulted Dr. Sands at Mr. Conkling's house between five and nine. The patient shows marked improvement and no danger of death tonight. Doctors say if he lasts three days he will recover though the disease remains treacherous. Very little pus has discharged since surgery.
John A Logan was released in Newcastle Pennsylvania after a magistrate ruled he acted under the sheriff's orders and could not be held for shooting a rioting Italian at the Carbon limestone quarries. The Italian was not badly hurt.
In Axroosa Pennsylvania between Galluxin and South Fork about 4000 to 5000 soft coal miners refuse a 10 percent cut from 45 cents per ton net for mining. They will decide on Wednesday, and a strike is imminent.
A Knoxville special reports a battle between strikers and mountaineers at Cumberland Gap Tunnel on the Powell's Valley railroad. Five men were killed and twelve wounded, with fears of further trouble.
The Calumet and Hecla Mine expected to reopen Wednesday as officials believe the fire is extinguished. The Dollar Bay copper smelting works and rolling mills, just completed, have begun operations with all systems running smoothly.
Laney Walker nine, Libbie Ashe twelve, quarreled in Union County when Walker fatally stabbed Ashe in the breast with a knife yesterday. Walker reportedly fled. Libbie Ashe died instantly.
