William Jennings Bryan toured Indiana delivering speeches with large crowds along the route. From Lintoe to Bedford the earth wagon train arrived at 5 19 pm to a crowd of up to 500 at the depot, but darkness and lateness kept fans from a clear greeting as the weary orator shook hands from the platform after a long day.
Dwight Mayes, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Hayes, was knocked down at the Bryan depot while a hand car approached. He stepped onto the track and narrowly escaped serious injury as the car could not be stopped in time. His head slipped clear of the rail and the wheels narrowly missed his neck, leaving him with only bruises.
Amando Arizona asks if it is legal to raffle himself at one dollar per chance to raise money for living expenses. He proposes selling chances via mail order to Western men and Eastern papers, with a drawing to win him. The Post Office rules prohibit lotteries or similar schemes by chance or drawing. The department will not decide on his specific case.
The Odon Journal runs a fundraiser offering ten volumes of Americanized Britannica to the school in Madison or Van Buren townships that gains the most subscribers. Each 25 cents paid earns a vote, and votes can be cast for any school in the two townships excluding Odon, with the top district awarded the $30 worth set.
Rev A A Aria and A B Condo are the same man. A B Condo of Sanger Texas joined the United Brethren church after a seven year mystery. He was adopted at birth, served as a drummer boy in the Civil War, taught music, and held prominent church roles in Indiana before disappearing. A letter exchange exposed his identity, he faced possible harm to the church, and was welcomed back at the Medora conference. He will resume preaching after confirming his status.
Rev 3.00 officiated the private marriage of Oliver B. Odell and Miss Guicene Keller at the bride’s parents home two miles south of Burns City. The ceremony was small due to a burial in the family. the couple will reside with Odell’s parents in East Odon.
Mrs Daniel Murray died at her home Friday night. She was aged the report notes.
Amos Thompson, a well known farmer, died last Friday at his home east of Epsom from typhoid fever. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Tolbert Chapel.
William McIntire, running a wholesale booze joint at Elnora, faces warrants sworn by George Rogers and Homer Lee for selling alcohol. A paper error delayed arrest on the first papers, and by the time corrected, McIntire had fled to pursue other crimes.
Mrs Jessie Iva Lacy wife of Van H Lacy died at her Indianapolis home on October 17 of consumption. Born August 27 1884 in Quincy Indiana she was 20 years 1 month and 16 days old. She lived in Quincy Spencer and Odon before moving with her husband to Indianapolis and joined the M E Church at age twelve. She was a Knights and Ladies of Honor member and was known for cheerfulness. Funeral services were held in Spencer last Sunday with burial there.
Judge Ely releases ten year old Alonzo Schenck who faced charges of stealing a horse and 85 dollars from Greene Duff. Prosecutor Crull declines to prosecute and quits office if forced. The boy claims he acted because the owner owed his dead father. C A Cleaver of New York agrees to take the boy, educate him, and provide a home, and the court assigns custody to him.
The Washington Canning Company is sued by Stecker Lithographing Co. of Rochester N. C. for failing to take 25000 ordered labels. The complaint seeks $487.50 in two paragraphs 437.50 and 50. The case reflects a civil action for merchandise and services rendered.
Advert reads that 10 or 20 acres of tract land adjoins Odoo are for sale and urges prompt contact with E. El Forsythe.
Odon plans its first and biggest horse show in the region on November 1 and 2 with 300 in awards. Officers: President M B Fisher Secretary E E Forsythe Treasurer Wm Sims Marshal W T Alexander plus committees for advertising premiums soliciting program. The two day program includes drafts, mules, cattle, light harness, and street parade events with prize money across multiple classes.
Republican gubernatorial candidate J Frank Hanley and former Secretary of State Union B Hunt will address audiences in Washington on Saturday. The Erie and Indiana line will extend the northbound train to 4 30 pm to help residents return home the same day.
Dennis Sullivan, a New York newsboy, is nominated as Republican candidate for the House of Assembly. His opponent, Archibald Alexander, is described as a young millionaire representing the Democrats.
A local fundraising drive offers a ten volume leather bound encyclopedia set valued at $39 to the school in Van Buren or Madison Township, Odon schools excluded. For 25 cents per The Odon Journal subscription, voters choose the school. non-subscribers urged to join. Voting will occur between Thanksgiving and Christmas with date to be announced.
