Tragic Silo Fire Claims Local Farmer Elmer York

A townwide tragedy occurred when Elmer P. York, a prominent farmer and longtime township teacher, burned to death in a silo at the Mumaw farm four miles northwest of town. Ferguson escaped, York perished en route to safety as flames destroyed the barn and silo. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Newberry with ministers conducting.

Ledgerwood Dies in Lawton Oklahoma Hospital

George D. Ledgerwood former resident of the community died last Sunday in Lawton Oklahoma Hospital of general debility. Born January 9 1859 in Mc Cameron Township Martin County he would have been sixty next year. He never married and lived with his sister Rebecca. Funeral at Scotland Cemetery with Rev Buchanan officiating. John Byrer died of incipient pneumonia at Camp Taylor after serving briefly in the military. He was about 22 and buried at Kilgore Cemetery.

Daviess County’s Daniel W Wetchem Elevated to Brigadier General

Daniel W Wetchem, a West Point graduate and the only Daviess county citizen to reach that academy, is promoted from colonel to brigadier general for the war period. A native of the county, he was born on a local farm, educated in county schools, and remains a long-time Journal subscriber who recently renewed from France.

Federal Order Closes Daviess County Schools Indefinitely

Schools in Daviess county remain closed by federal order until October 27 with no township institutes. reopening depends on compliance with federal directives and health officer guidance. Teachers and pupils may be asked to census district stock if gathering reopens before October 15.
