Joseph M Stotts a prominent Madi son township citizen and Odon business owner died at his north Main street home after a long illness. Born October 1853 in Daviess County he married Robina Summersville in 1879 and left two children and two grandchildren. Funeral services were at his residence followed by burial at Walnut Hill cemetery.
J. C. Flint and W. S. Kyle, managers and owners of the Flint Kyle Telephone Company, arrived from Bruceville Teleday to place the system in good condition and announce plans for extensive service improvements. The firm has established long distance service nationwide and will expand offerings.
A large crowd of stock holders attended a Saturday night meeting at Poindexter and Wilsons to hear reports on hiring a switchboard operator and locating a new telephone exchange. The location proposed was the O Dell property opposite the Dearmin poultry house for 600 dollars, with W R Neeremer named to purchase. A new operator was tentatively hired but the report was dropped and a fresh committee to be appointed. The meeting adjourned after extended discussion.
A touring car driven by Odus Taylor of Einora narrowly avoided a serious crash on the Killion cut-off when flood damage concealed a washedout bridge. The vehicle hung eight feet over an embankment but all occupants escaped unharmed and walked to Einora. The car was retrieved Monday and damaged only slightly.
The Thimble club held its eighth anniversary on Tuesday evening September 30 with husbands as guests. Mrs. H. V. Merrill hosted in a crimson and cream decorated home. The party featured games and a three course luncheon including assorted sandwiches oysters celery olives Saratoga chips cabbage salad and angel food and devil food cake.
Purdue orchard expert Mr. Palmer led a field demonstration southeast of the city, sharing practical steps for profitable orchards. He stressed pruning, thinning, sun exposure, and balance between wood growth and fruit, noting the time to bloom and proper fruit spur management for a vigorous future crop.
John Danner was severely injured last Sunday when a horse pulling his buggy bolted and crashed into a telephone pole in the east end of the city. He was taken to Dr. DeMotte for treatment. the horse was unharmed.
Grade cards due early next week report cards note any grade below 80 as unsatisfactory with 75 as the lowest passing mark marked in red. The Junior Latin class completes Caesar and begins Cicero Orations while Geometry covers most of Book III. The season opens with Plainville defeating Odon 7 to 5 in the first baseball game.
A civil service exam will be held on Saturday October 25 in Plainville Ind to certify candidates for a fourth class postmaster vacancy and possible others. The 973 dollar annual pay, age 21 plus, residency in the post office territory, and US citizenship are required with forms obtainable from the Plainville postmaster or the U.S. Civil Service Commission.
The Daviess County Soldiers and Sailors monument will be dedicated on Wednesday October 8 in Washington. Veterans and all interested march at 9 30 AM led by Grand Marshal Captain Zack Jones. The program includes songs prayers dedications speeches and music by students and local bands.
A Lyons boosters caravan with about 45 participants in nine decorated cars toured Oct visible in town. They carried a drum corps and bells to advertise the Lyons Poultry and Stock Show on Oct 6. They distributed programs and sought to drum up interest though exact itinerary was not obtained.
An election is scheduled for Tuesday November 4 in the town of Don to elect local officers. The notice lists the officers to be chosen and confirms polling or procedural details per local election law.
The Loogootee republicans held a convention placing Will K. Penrod at the head of the ticket for mayor. Penrod, a former mayor, leads a slate that includes Clerk Joseph Smith Treasurer Jacob Hoffman and councilmen at large William Mosier Louis O Brooks plus ward councilmen Louis Feagans Charles Lawhead and Frank Cane.

A telegram from Fountain City, Tennessee informs relatives of the death of A. J. Newgent known as Uncle Jack. Born September 15, 1838 in Sullivan County he lived in Park County and Odon before moving to Knoxville two years ago. Funeral details were not available at press time.
