A gigantic black bear roams near Charlestown and Sellersburg killing sheep and hogs and injuring animals. James Lightner found the beast in his pig pen where it killed three pigs. a shepherd dog was shredded. Mrs. Lycurgus Freeman escaped a bear charge while feeding chickens. The bear later carried off a fat pig and vanished.
In Indianapolis on a Wednesday afternoon C V Dantzer superintendent of the animal department and workers Chris Tienne and Thomas Miller entered the deer park to improve the water service. A large male deer charged, Dantzer struck it with a hoe, the blade catching on the horns, and a 20 minute scuffle followed before the buck was secured. Tienne and Miller were badly injured with cuts and bruises, Miller’s clothing ripped. Dantzer escaped with minor bruises.
A southbound Pennsylvania train collided with a freight engine at Raymond street. Engines toppled 30 feet down the embankment. engineer John Ritchie unconscious with head and leg injuries. Fireman Homer Hall bruised after being slammed into a post. Passengers unharmed. trains remained on track and all were returned to the city.
Miss May Hennessy of Morris and Hall's When We Were Twenty One Co. fell ill with typhoid fever in Anderson Indiana on Friday night and was unable to appear on stage. She is resting at the Columbia hotel.
Four men claiming to be from Cincinnati attempted to hold up a Monon passenger train near Cyclone, Indiana, firing on the engine and passengers. Sheriff Corns and Officer Hill pursued and seized the group three miles from Cyclone. the four, named Charlies Johnson 18 James Mack 29 Frank Smith 19 and Harry Gray 19, were jailed.
In Munele Indiana on Sunday a party hunted near Smithland. TE Whetsell from West Virginia joined the chase and killed a deer on D M Taylor?s farm with a shot from Whetsell’s rifle. Whetsell notes he has killed over fifty deer in multiple states.
In Indianapolis on November 15 Magistrate Stout was summoned to Thomas Riggs home to marry Albert Springer and May Robertson. A surprise party organized by Springer's friends led to the unexpected ceremony when a guest shouted Come May and get married. May Robertson consented as the ceremony proceeded.
Fort Wayne Indiana November 15 Dr Geo W Ziegler of this city is jailed in default of 1500 bail accused by his wife of grand larceny. She says he a widower 56 proposed marriage for 3000. She left notes and securities with an Angola banker and claims he used them to obtain the money. Ziegler admits paying 3000 for a wife but denies the larceny charge.
The circuit court jury found Henry Wilkins not responsible for the actions of his 16 year old son Floyd who shot and killed Fred Jones, a 9 year old. The suit by Jones's father for $10,000 damages was dismissed as the court ruled the boy had the right to shoot a target gun inside city limits by law.
