Long Island lifesaving feats amid brutal 1904 storm
In February 1904 a crippling gale struck the Atlantic coast from Maine to the Gulf. At Lone Hill on Long Island a schooner Place ran aground, four life-savers battled with ice and waves for two days to rescue two men, one dying of frost and injury. Other rescues followed as Surfmen Raynor and Latham saved a drowning sailor from the Cromwell, while two tragic wrecks on the island’s ends underscored the perils faced by the U S Life-Saving Service.
