A large barn owned by Milton Bowman near the southwest of the city caught fire Tuesday afternoon following a lightning strike. The blaze destroyed stored grain and damaged a wagon, with the structure partly insured.
The Hastings couple marked their wedding anniversary at home with friends and family. A noon dinner featured a red decorated cake and floral table settings, followed by social activities, singing, and refreshments. Guests traveled from Odon Evansville Newberry Linton and nearby towns to join in the celebration.
Mrs Will Rosenberry and son Wallace visited Indianapolis from Friday to Sunday. Homer Myers of Bruceville spent part of the week with his parents. James Burriss and Will Rosenarry attended a Bechtel church meeting. Cemetery work improved grounds. C R Dungan of Sullivan farmed there earlier in the week. Mrs Toon ill. Charley Miller of Bruceville visited family. Genevieve Flinn visited Elton Herron at Odon. Hubert Myers attended Charley’s sale. James Burris and family visited Hugh Meeker at Odon. About 85 friends and relatives gathered for W Hackier’s birthday dinner. A severe storm caused local damage. Jeannett Ward left for Indiana Central University in Indianapolis to attend school.
Mrs Grace Harding formerly of Odon and Mr Arthur C Massey were married at 4:90 o clock on Wednesday May 19 at the Hillside Christian Church home of Rev Charles Fillmore in Indianapolis. The bride wore a white chiffon over white satin gown with silver lace pink buttons and pink satin girdle. The wedding was a private surprise planned for friends. Mrs Massey is daughter of W T Harding former manager of the local Inter State Telephone Co and will pursue music studies in Indianapolis. Mr Massey is son of C A Massey of 2248 Langley Ave Indianapolis and works for the Star newspaper. The couple reside at 2321 Roosevelt.
Linton Indiana to stage a massive concert Sunday June 6 1915 by the Consolidated Bands of Southern Indiana with over two hundred musicians from Bedford Bloomington Gosport Cloverdale Spencer Worthington Clay City Patricksburg Bowling Green Jasonville and Odon under Prof W S Coffey. Estimated crowds reach 20000 in Linton with ten concerts scheduled including Bedford July 4 and Jasonville July 18.
Notes state home fittings are reserved for true necessity due to time constraints and the need for a fully equipped refracting room. The practice emphasizes customers should visit the office for precise work. Mrs. R. A. Blackburn and her son Robert of Indianapolis visited her parents Mr and Mrs Scott KECK, The Jeweler and Optometrist, Alford, Saturday and Sunday.
Thieves broke into the C and F station in Plainville last Friday night. Entry gained by forcing a window around 9 30. A suit of clothes from Herschel Williams and two mail sacks were opened and robbed. Railway detectives and secret service agents may be assigned. Strangers were seen in town the day of the robbery with no solid clues yet.
The trial of Matt Cox former marshal of Elnora charged with assault and battery with intent to kill Arthur Dillon hardware merchant Elnora has been continued to the next term. The court noted the case will take more than one day and that the A M Perkins L 8 Walker arson case will convene at the courthouse first, with witnesses awaiting payment. Judge Ogdon ordered the Cox case postponed to avoid county expense.
The young ladies Sunday School class taught by C A Pickett entertained the young men’s class taught by J A Johnson at Miss Ethel McNeely’s home in East Odon Friday evening. Games contests and refreshments of ice cream strawberries wafers and pop were served with thirty class members present.
The Odeon Chamber of Commerce met at Poindexter and Wilson on Wednesday. The board report was presented as officials discussed entertaining the consolidated bands of Southern Indiana and plans for the Fourth of July celebration in Odon. The next meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday night.
Harve Chinn of this city and Jas Albright of Plainville returned Monday from a two week encampment at Culver military academy. The free camp for 200 boys offered uniformed drill, camp cooking, first aid, and military etiquette under Culver officers and cadets with recreation and lectures.
Captain Jack Wirt, aged over ninety, returns to his Indianapolis home after a five week visit with his brother Thos. Wirt. A former postal official since 1869, he served in both navy and army in the Civil War and, despite age, remains active and vigorous. He recalls wooden Navy days and hoisting the Union Jack over the Federal Building.
Large crowds enjoyed a free film and concert last night with broad appreciation. Next Thursday features a Vitagraph comedy titled How Cissy Made Good promising more lively entertainment for patrons and their friends.
A Tuesday afternoon storm brought heavy wind and rain that damaged telephones, lines and buildings. Many small structures toppled, trees torn up, and several barns ruined. The southern part of the county faced a deluge as Loosgostee suffered severe wind impacts and floodwaters rose along creeks and small streams.
The residence of M. B. Ledgerwood about four miles east of town was struck by lightning Wednesday morning. The front door was blown in, glass broken in the transom, and veranda damaged. Insurance covers the loss.
About eighty friends and relatives gathered at Eaglesville to honor Uncle George Hackler on his 91st birthday. A large dinner was served by Kinfe and Williams, with cousin Capt. 2. Vo Garien among the guests, the latter the oldest attendee at eighty five. The event included children nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren as part of a warm family gathering.
