Hindman formerly of this city now living in Indianapolis spent a few days this week visiting his parents Mr and Mrs J M Hindman and his sister Mrs H V Mernll. He was accompanied by his wife and young daughters as he prepares to sail for France next week.
Mr. Hindman has been active in wartime efforts as a four minute man and speaker in Indianapolis venues. He aided bonds drives Red Cross and Y M C A campaigns and has been chosen Y M C A overseas secretary, spending a year with troops. He spoke at M E church after Epworth League service and urged public support before returning home to finalize voyage plans.
The Council urges frugality in all expenditures to support the war effort. Citizens are advised to avoid waste, save food, fuel, and materials, and practice self denial in dress and living. The message, from the Council of National Affairs, credits collective effort as patriotic duty. Mrs. F Barkley and Mrs. J M Winklepieck traveled to Indianapolis for a Federation of Women's Clubs meeting.
The Daviess county draft board announces June 5 as the single day for registration of all men age twenty one who are not yet drafted and will be twenty one by that date. About 150 to 200 men are expected to register at the county courthouse to meet June and July calls. Provost General Crowder notes 50 percent of Class 1 men are called, with about 75 percent in the county already drafted.
Morning Red Cross drive opens with teams set to cover eleven township sections. Odon Reality Co. organized the efforts at Tuesday night meeting. Volunteers leave at nine o clock for their districts. Madison township quota set at 1150 dollars and expected to be met.
Jd G Allen Liberty loan salesman manager reports Daviess county receives twelve Liberty loan honor flags from the St Louis FED district office. Flags honor the third loan campaign, with one for the county, one for Washington city, and ten for townships, to be flown in public places. Each flag measures 6 by 54 inches and bears Liberty loan window passer designs.
Three Odow boys Delbert Sears Ed Carrel and Dele Cooper left this week to join the colors. The group from the town is strong with every member an athlete over 80 pounds. Delbert Sears departs Thursday for Columbus Ohio to enter military service. A social gathering of 48 was held at J Sears home with ice cream and cake. Milton Herron traveled to Leesville Indiana for the funeral of Richard Plummer.

Announcement of the marriage of John C. York of Selina Kansas to Miss Schnee Selina. The wedding occurred Saturday May 1, with York described as an energetic ambitious young man. The Yorks arrived Wednesday to spend time with his parents and relatives.
Arrangements for Memorial Day include a 2 40 p m gathering of Grand Army of the Republic members at the G A R hall, a procession to the Christian church for a sermon by Rev Darby Washington, and a cemetery decoration program at Walnut Hill with address by E T Laughlin. A citywide closing of business from 1 30 to 4 00 p m is requested following afternoon services.
James Clark and a friend from Whatcver Iowa drove to pay a grief visit to his brothers A M and W H Clark. Walter Evans and wife were in Washington Saturday. John W Burris and family visited Mirs Burris's parents in Odon Sunday. Lawrence Clark and wife returned home after visiting his parents A M and Mrs Clark. Rainy weather dampens farming with late plowing. Rev Huddleson of Newberry to preach memorial at J B church Sunday night. Mrs Art Dyal and daughter Lillian go to Washington for Lillians tonsil operation. they returned Sunday.
Young residents held a Tuesday evening dance at Hotel Hall in honor of Correll and Cooper. A number attended and the event provided an enjoyable evening for the town.
