May day reports from 19 May describe Soufriere activity on St Vincent and heightened sickness from gas exposure. Dreaded devastation continues in St Pierre Martinique as fires, collapses and many deaths are recorded with refugees aided by local authorities and aid ships.
The British steamer Roddam escaped Martinique’s eruption and brought ash and fire damage aboard at St Lucia on May 11. Captain Cauntell reports decks covered in two feet of ash, glowing embers burning rigging and gear, and fragments of human remains among the debris.
The War Department states that ships Dixie and Sterling will supply enough rations and essential goods for about a month for up to 50,000 people in Martinique and St Vincent. Government plans include yeast codfish and other items, with Private donations augmented by official purchases. Over $100,000 of the $200,000 appropriation already spent.
Consul General Bruwnert of France, speaking at a New York club dinner, thanked citizens of New York and the United States for aid to his countrymen in the West Indies since the Martinique disaster.
Cable dispatches indicate a widening volcanic disturbance in the West Indies now spanning about a thousand miles with many islands at risk. In Jamaica sulfur pits smoke and boil as the air grows hot and natives show great fear.

In Monterey Mexico on May 15 reports that volcanic disturbances on Martinique have raised water temperatures at Topo Chico hot springs near the city. Normal 104 degrees, now 110 degrees according to thermometer tests.
Paris May 16 The Canadian commissioner Mr Faber met with the minister of the colonies M De crais and announced that Canada has subscribed 25000 dollars to the Martinique relief fund, funds placed at the disposal of M Decrais.
Newark mayors plea for help after a terrible disaster. Mayor Seymour calls on the public to contribute, with the city treasurer named custodian of the funds.
Secretary Root accepted Dr Louis Klopschs offer to send 1000 barrels of flour to Martinique sufferers and had flour carried on a government ship to the stricken islanders.
King Edward contributed 408 pounds to the Mansion House fund for St Vincent volcano victims. Subscriptions are opened across England to aid the disaster relief effort.
French ambassador Jules Tambon sent a lengthy telegram to Secretary Hay expressing France’s gratitude for the United States efforts to relieve suffering from the Martinique disaster. The report notes the memory of those who perished in the St Pierre catastrophe dated May 26.
A severe cyclone battered Goliad and surrounding areas with reports of 90 dead and 120 injured in Goliad and additional damage across San Antonio Fort Sam Houston and Dallas. Fort Sam Houston suffered government property damage estimated at 21000 while private homes and landmarks sustained losses.
A May cloudburst in eastern Sparta County wrecked three long bridges on the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul line near Oakdale, washed out track, and destroyed over 200 feet of the Chicago Northwestern near ten miles south. Hogs and sheep were drowned and crops, highways, and bridges suffered damage. Lightning struck Monroe Juneau and Vernon counties.
A May cloudburst in Dubuque Louisiana dropped two inches of rain in one hour causing washouts on the Hainess Central to Waterloo and blocking Great Western between Dubuque and Oelwein. Trains from the west did not arrive until Sunday night. The Milwaukee Road near McGregor also suffered damage.
An electrical storm hit McGregor Iowa late Saturday night collapsing three brick structures housing Freze's jewelry store, the Metropolitan saloon, and a billiard hall. Four men sustained minor injuries and sewers were washed out by flooding, with property losses estimated at ten thousand dollars. In New York, five hundred East Side Hebrew residents formed the Ladies Anti Beef Trust, electing Mrs Carolyn Schatzberger president and Mrs Pantine Frickel treasurer.
London May 19 The Liverpool Daily Post reports that at a White Star line meeting the agreement to transfer the line to the Atlantic shipping combine was unanimously confirmed.
A May 19 wind storm struck Fairfield Nebraska wrecking the St Joseph and Grand Island round house and blowing apart Mr Benedict’s residence. Several boards were uprooted but no one was injured.

In Plainfield Indiana on May 19 Roger Davis nine found a dynamite cartridge in his father’s barn and placed it in a hot stove causing a blast that mangled his right hand two fingers and a thumb were amputated. His mother was hurt in the eye and an older brother injured in the head. The kitchen and home suffered fire damage but flames were stopped. The injuries to Mrs Davis and the elder son are serious though not believed fatal.
Frank Orell, depot operator at Vandalia in Knightsville, Indiana, became violently insane on Friday. He nearly caused a collision between east and west passenger trains and two freights, ran through Knightsville shouting the depot had been robbed, and brandished a revolver. An unreadable order caused the freight engineer to doubt him, prompting a rapid report to Brazil. Trains were halted while orders were clarified and operators reassigned.
In Valaprise Indiana on May 17 Ryan Klatt from Kouts returned home after a night’s spree and shot his wife three times, one bullet hitting her in the head and killing her. Emma Horton, a domestic helper, rushed to aid and was shot in the face.
