Memorial Day Services by GAR Post Featured May 3

Memorial Day observance led by the G.A.R. Post includes a parade on Main Street, decoration of graves, and a church service. Veterans from the Civil War to World War II honored, with speeches by Rev. Chaver Reading and Rev. Edwin Shake Lone, and a Memorial service scheduled May 29 at the U.B. church.

Sunday School Convention Draws Large Madison Attendance

The tenth semi annual Sunday School convention at First Christian Church drew big crowds both sessions with a packed afternoon and a well attended evening program. Speakers included Simrad Slaven and Jord Fields while Rev Jodwin Shane Foiertee presided as substitute for ill Rev Roberts.

Two Fire Losses Saturday Night Reported In Town

A Perry Howard residence suffered a kitchen fire blamed on a defective flue with flames reaching upstairs before being extinguished. insurance partly covered losses. Nearby PLL Hudderson barn burned the same morning, a horse and harness saved earlier as the barn fell to ashes. Visitors from Cincinnati, Mr and Mrs James Myers, left town Saturday.

The Daviess county Knights of Pythias held their annual Plainville meeting last Thursday night. Hosts Plainville lodge welcomed members from multiple towns and hosted a chicken supper at the M W A hall before resuming at the Kooof P hall. Anna D P D Goshorn wife of Jesse Goshorn a respected Washington resident died Sunday at the family home after a three week illness due to goitre Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 oclock from the residence led by Rev Samuel Reid of Jeffersonville She was born January 7 1854 in Hamilton County Ohio to Samuel Johnson She is survived by two children Roy and Maude one son died in infancy her mother Mrs cleaner Johnson 88 of Linora three brothers Charles Elmer and Stanley and one sister Mrs Harry Hitchens of Elnora The deceased was a devoted church member and active in charitable work.

Proposed Mal Schedule Fails to Please

Town opposes new Southeastern mail timetable set to start next Sunday. Under the plan a 3:43 AM Terre Haute mail arrives about current time, while an 11:10 AM train would also carry mail but would deliver little. Residents push to convert the evening train into a mail carrier to speed daily mail and early dailies. Chief Clerk Webster later says the night train will carry mail.

Legion Post Visits Washington for a Memorial Building Drive

Aden Post of the American Legion traveled to the county seat Monday night to visit Birchwood Post. A large group from Aden and friends from the Southern Indiana Band joined the delegation. They paraded to the Elks Club for a banquet, and Washington Post hosted the visitors. The Birchwood unit plans a large Fourth of July celebration to raise funds for a Memorial Community building.

An opportunity to view the aurora borealis drew crowds Saturday night despite a bright moon. From about 9 oclock to 1 oclock the northern skies glowed from horizon to zenith with streams of light radiating east and west from the north polar region.

Thieves Loot Odon Post Office in Break-In

Thieves entered the Odon Postoffice by prying the front door and unlocked lobby doors. They opened the safe and took about 63 dollars in cash plus 400 dollars of Masonic funds, scattering papers and destroying few office items. no stamps were taken. The Odon Milling Co. office was entered but yielded nothing of value. No clues or motives established.

Learn New Traffic Rules and Signals Warned to Autoists

Benedict House Bill No 12 now law will govern towns not under municipal rule and requires drivers to yield to traffic from the right at intersections. Left turns require a horizontal arm signal, right turns a right angle, stopping a vertical arm motion, and closed cars must use a horn signal. Fines range from 5 to 25 dollars for violations.
