A lake near Valdosta Georgia vanishes for three or four years and then returns regardless of weather. It spans three miles by three quarters of a mile with an average depth of fifteen feet. Currently water is draining through subterranean passages and in two to three weeks a mammoth basin will remain offering a fine beach.

They reviewed sworn reports on bar iron sales for March and April and agreed to keep the current wage scale until July 1 when the yearly scale expires.
Lima Peru May 12 During a Monday afternoon storm a derrick at the French farm was blown down injuring three men led by Philip Rousculp who is gravely hurt. Telegraph lines and railroad communication were knocked out. A second derrick on the Zeis farm near Lima collapsed with five workers injured.
Fire sweeps the lower Hamilton county preserves in New York with Benson Day and Crowville hit hard. Settlements destroyed and residents camp by Mudlake to escape the flames. Dry woods fuel spreading fires and total damage already considerable.
Blewett of Wheeling West Virginia hanged himself at Sparrow Point. He left a note saying he had a wife and two children in Wheeling and had failed to find work, suffering starvation. The note gave his mother Mrs. J B Crowley’s address in Muncie Pennsylvania.
The state Republican convention selected delegates to the St. Louis meeting. Senators Lee Matle and Thomas Carter, Congressman Charles Harman, Thomas C. Marshal, Alex Metz, and John Steville were chosen. Delegates were not instructed and no prominent presidential candidates were favored.
Havana reports Weyler had offered resignation but it was not accepted. Details of the delegation and response remain unclear. May 12 sources indicate ongoing Cuban political tensions with the Spanish administration.

Eleven lives are reported lost when the towboat Harry Brown exploded its boiler at 11 o clock Sunday night, 25 miles south of Towsoat. The vessel sunk quickly, with several wounded rescued by the steamer Wash Honshell. Captain John Keirn and crew members are among the injured. the boat, built in 1879 at Pittsburgh, measured 210 feet long and 1934 feet beam.
A steamship Laurada possibly received cargo outside the three mile limit off Cape May New Jersey on Monday. A large steamer and a schooner were seen offshore with tugs towing the schooner toward the steamer before the transfer occurred and the steamship disappeared toward the southeast.
Prime Minister Castello held a long conference with American minister Hannis Taylor on theCompetitor filibusters. Capt. Gen. Weyler cables that Cuba campaign issues may hindered by Washington interference. The U S also presses indemnities for burned American cane fields and property.
