Wedded in Race Street Wedding Joins Martha Sommers to Rev Merrill Lester

Miss Martha Sommers united in marriage with Rev Merrill Lester of Carmel California at 9 AM Sunday at her father John Sommers home on Race Street. The ceremony conducted by Rev F A Lester, groom's father, followed by ring rites. The bride taught in Odon city schools seven years and is active in church and social work. The groom, son of Rev F A Lester, is a DePauw and Boston Theological Seminary alum and pastor at Carmel under Bishop Hughes. They depart for Carmel after a brief visit and will be at home after June 1.

Oil for Streets Will Arrive Next Week

The oil for the streets will arrive at the start of next week. An 8000 gallon tank car was purchased while the reservoir holds 6000 gallons, so 2000 gallons will be laid on the streets at once. Oil is four cents per gallon cash, and blocks or owners must arrange for oiling their sections.

Garten Ditch Sold For Elmore Township Project

County surveyor William J. Shanks sells the Garten ditch in Elmore township to McFarland and Swazee for 1343.50 for the open ditch and James A. Stewart for 224.50 to build the tile section. Bids from John R. Ketcham at 1400 for open ditch and John Eads at 224.90 for tile were submitted.

Picnic Dinner Honoring Rev and Mrs Lester at City Park

Members of the M. E. Church held a picnic dinner at the city park Monday in honor of Rev. and Mrs. F. A. Lester of Moores Hill. An abundance of good things to eat and a thoroughly enjoyed afternoon followed as friends were visited here earlier in the week.

Blaze at Cal lahans blacksmith shop extinguished quickly

Early Saturday a fire alarm rang and people rushed to the engine house to find Cal lahans blacksmith shop alight. The fire began on the roof and was put out with little damage.

Narrow escape as boy caught in feed mill line shaft

Curtis Kidwell escaped death at his father’s feed grinding plant southwest of the city last Friday. A belt came off a pulley, he climbed to replace it, clothing caught the shaft, and he was thrown off. He suffered severe bruises and lacerations but no broken bones. Dr. I E Bowman treated him at his father’s house.

A residence owned by Dulpha Bowman west of here was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm last week. A corner of the house tore away but no fire started. Mrs. Bowman was severely shocked and felt electricity effects for about a day before recovering.

The Plainville high school conducted its commencement last Friday in Woodmen’s hall with a large crowd. Dr. King, president of Moores Hill College, delivered the address. The Plainville orchestra provided music for the event. Eleven graduates completed the class.

County selects Julius Smith as attendance officer

The county board of education and county superintendent met Saturday afternoon and named Julius Smith of Van Buren township attendance officer for the county schools. He will replace W. H. Allen who had been serving in that role.

The disappearance of Bert Swallows from his home near Epsom causes neighborhood concern and distress for his wife and seven children. Runaway Bolt destroys buggy near town

Dillard Boardman drove a horse that bolted when frightened by an automobile about two miles west of the city. The buggy overturned, Boardman was thrown and bruised, and the horse fled until caught near J. H. Wright’s residence on the edge of town.

Change of venue granted in grand larceny case

Alvin Padgett filed in circuit court for Charles Thomas a motion for change of venue from Judge J W Ogden. The motion was granted with Judge Gardiner assigned to hear the case. Ogden previously reprimanded the jury that freed Thomas in a prior term over Emmerling cigar store robbery implications. He directed Thomas's arrest on the grand larceny charge.

Dr J D Dollens Dies Aged 72 In Trinity Springs

Dr J T C Dollens a respected Trinity Springs physician died Wednesday April 28 at age seventy two after long illness. Survived by his wife formerly Pauline Rogers of Shoals and five children J C Claude Beecher Jennie and Mrs J C Lundy plus relatives. A Civil War veteran, he was honored in funeral services held Thursday at Trinity Springs Cemetery led by Rev Ed McBride.
