Civil War Veteran Levi Dunlap Dies at Home

Levi Dunlap, one of the city’s oldest residents and Civil War veteran, died at his home on Main Street Thursday morning from complications of inflammatory rheumatism. Born November 5, 1838 in Harrison County Ohio, he lived in Madison Township, then Oden, married three times, with two surviving spouses, and two children who died in infancy. He served 1861 to 1864 with the Army of the Potomac and Indiana volunteers. A natural mechanic, he invented tools for builders. Funeral at the Mr. E church Saturday at 4 10 p.m. with Rev. Edwin Shake officiating. burial Walnut Hill.

Death of Asa Vertrice from influenza and pneumonia near Mud Pike church

Asa Vertrice of Elmere township died at home near Mud Pike church on Wednesday morning from pneumonia and influenza. Aged past 29, he was son of Isaac and Laura Vertrice, married to Myrdle Pearl Kinnaman, with three children and a surviving wife. Funeral held at Mud Pike church Thursday at 1:00 pm. Clinton Burkhart union links Van Buren and Bogard townships

Walter Lacy Clinton of Van Buren township and Miss Maude E. Burkhart of Bogard township wed at the bride’s parents home last Tuesday evening. The ceremony was at four o clock with immediate family present and a post ceremony supper. The bride, daughter of Frank and Mrs Burkhart, wore blue taffeta and is active in social and church circles. The groom, son of the late H C Clinton, is a progressive farmer admired in the community. The couple will reside on the Clinton farm about five miles southwest of town.

Miss Georgia Toon Visits Loogootee Friends

Burns City resident Miss Georgia Toon spent this week visiting friends in Loogootee. Mr and Mrs Joe Danner, who had been ill with the flu, are on the mend.

S Frank Marshall Dies in Burns City Community

Mrs Frank Marshall longtime Burns City resident died at home last Tuesday from complications of illness. Born Phoebe Sims Marshall May 13 1870 she was 51. She married Frank Marshall in 1888 and leaves husband and son Sidney plus many relatives. Funeral Thursday at 10 30 Rev C H Buchanan officiated and burial was in Burns City cemetery with trains stopping to convey mourners.

Twenty two children gathered at Mrs. E. P Brady’s Race Street home for a joint birthday party honoring Jack Brady aged six and Rebecca Lee Flint aged three. March birthdays were celebrated with two cakes and candles as ice cream, cake, games, and gifts filled the afternoon.
