Wedded At Home Of Parents In Quiet Ceremony

Eva Alice Carr daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Carr married Frank Bogart son of Milton Bogart of Newberry in a small wedding at the bride’s parents home northeast of Odon. Rev Philip May of Newberry officiated. The couple will reside near Newberry and received many gifts.

Efficiency Drive Tightens Indiana Teacher Exams

The state leverages stricter tests for teacher licenses under the state superintendent. Examinations now cover nine subjects including literature reading arithmetic history music geography science of education grammar and physiology. Candidates lose points for misspelled words as they’re graded on writing and spelling, with overall failure rates rising statewide, including Daviess County.

Fire razes Everett Laallen barn near Odeon

A large barn two miles south of Odeon belonging to Everett Laallen burned last Friday. Everett Ashley, while feeding at about 5 o clock, caused the lantern to topple or explode, igniting the hay. Three horses died and many chickens perished as flames spread, with total losses around 2100 including 900 on the barn and 500 insurance.

Death of Van Buren resident William Byer

William Byer, a respected Van Buren citizen, died Sunday at his home two miles west of Eaglesville. He suffered for months from dropsy and was over seventy years old, having been born in the vicinity where he passed away.

Weaver Hurt When Horse Fled From Train Near Elnora

Cis Weaver of near Mad Pike drove into Elnora as his horse spooked by train No 4 of the C T H and 8S E. overturned the buggy and threw him out causing a severe head gash and bodily bruises. Dr C C Young treated him and he is improving. Parham, who rode with Weaver, was thrown but not injured.

County Dog Fund Distributes to School Corporations

The county auditor completed the distribution of the dog fund to township trustees and school corporations. A total of 1 437.01 was paid into the county treasury, with five percent or 871.55 to the state hydrophobia fund and 1365.16 allocated among townships and schools by Auditor Core based on school population. Amounts include Barr 167.75, Bouvard Sac.21, Ednore 267.39, Harrison 63.16, Madison 365, Reeve 82.2, Steele 85.38, Veale 49.56, Van Buren 63.93, Washington 58.52, Elnora 1.55, Odon 52.11, Washington city 375.08.

Vernon Skomp Injured In Mine Accident At Eaglesville

Vernon Skomp of this place suffered a severe head wound and bodily injuries after a mine lift failed near Eaglesville. A group of youths on a sightseeing trip saw the cage rise about 87 feet when a part of the hoist broke, spine fractures not reported, and a long sweep gun spun free. Dr Ira Bowman treated a 6.25 inch gash that required stitches and Skomp was up by Monday and expected to recover for work. Jim Dyal, also in the party, sustained minor injuries.

Teachers Show Poor Showing in County Examinations

County records show seventy one teachers submitted papers with only fifteen earning passing marks. Arithmetic and literature proved hardest. T. E. Colbert led with a 95 average. The next examination is scheduled for March 30.
