Night of Heroic Storms on the New Jersey Coast

In February 1880 lifeboat crews along the Jersey shore faced two fierce storms. Five wrecks within hours tested four stations. forty three people were saved. Keeper Valentine and Surfman Van Brunt led rescues amid cold, snow, and drift. The Augu stina brig and the Stephen Harding chase ended with suicides and wrecks. A grueling, days-long chase culminated with the Taulane rescue as crews hauled men from rigging through perilous surf and shifting sands. The tale honors unflinching endurance and coordinated bravery against the sea.
