Odon business people clerks and townspeople unite to aid local farmers in harvest and threshing. Volunteers pledge time and labor to support crops during peak need, recognizing the shortage of help and the importance of saving every bit of produce.
Raglesville honors Decoration Day with Rev Lettie of Washington delivering the address. Miss Elsie Wadsworth directs patriotic exercises by local children. A parade to the cemetery decorated fallen soldiers’ graves led by old soldiers. Red Cross sewing at H E Sims home. Numerous neighbors and visitors noted as they attended services, visited relatives, and discussed corn planting and local news.
Daviess county will call up twenty three white men physically fit for service to train at Camp Sherman in Chillicothe Ohio for a five day period starting June 24 The local draft board received instructions Wednesday to fill the quota from Class I men and, if needed, select farmers who can be spared while avoiding those actively engaged in farming. Departure details and railroad schedules will follow.
A large Saturday Evening Post ad in Rexall Drug Store windows outlines a drive to recruit 50,000 men aged 21 to 30 for the new Merchant Marine. The U S Shipping Board will train recruits, who then serve overseas and are exempt from military draft. Rexall stores nationwide are designated enrollment stations, with G H Gilpatrick among those supporting the campaign. The ad notes the campaign is a government contribution to the war effort.
Miss Francis Arford of Terre Haute and Miss Florence Skomp of Indianapolis visit relatives in the area. Ada Bair and Amogene Bair of Terre Haute return home after a stay with relatives. Rexall Store advertises Durham Duplex safety razors at 10c, plus 8c and 15c soap varieties. W M Ledderwood of Denver, a real estate broker, makes a business trip via St Louis to Lenox County and Oklahoma drilling interests.
The county reports the largest wheat crop ever raised with few poor fields. Oats prospects are good and corn planting is finished on most farms. Some districts delay planting due to wet fields, but overall ample yields are expected.
Russell McCallian son of R J McCallian of this city has enlisted in the Marines and was sent to Paris School in South Carolina last Saturday. The youth had been stationed in Akron Ohio and enlisted from that post.
Word from W. H. Briner of this city states his son Floyd, serving in France, has been wounded with a gunshot to the arm. Later letters indicate he is in the hospital and is being cared for, with no serious complications reported.
Mr and Mrs James Vanostran and children with Mrs Ruby Walker and son and Miss Nelle Pruett traveled to Washington Thursday night. Lonnie Seddlemeyer bought a new King phonograph. Multiple visits include Mrs Myrtle Critchlow with Miss Mayme Ritter to Mrs Martha Wiltz, and Mr and Mrs Charles Stanley of Qjon with Arlie Obr ian party visiting J C Obr ian family. Local movements include Alfred Grove and family visits, Debolt family visiting Henry Ritter, and Misses Mabel Tomey Alice Baker Nelle and Ethel Pruett with Cordic and Ethel Grove. Dr Alexander Willie Rainey and Charles Jemey from Cornettsville were in town Sunday evening. Jesse Fiddler plans a Louisville trip to visit Ed at Camp Taylor. J Y Pruett and Clarence McCall will take possession of Bitter Store on Marth Mein. Miss Osi Skome spending week with home folks. Frank Brown of Sullivan County and Mrs Satunnathes Grave featured in week’s social notes.
Miss Dora York of Qodon and Mrs Ralph Greene of Terre Havce visited Burns City this week while Reed Armstrong and Vernon Storm traveled to Shoals on business. Grandia Banks was injured at home and John Webster, long a resident farmer, was buried on Decoration Day. Es Williams, formerly at Detroit’s Ford, joined the aviation force as a skilled mechanic.
A birthday dinner was hosted at Mr and Mrs William Chestnut home on Sunday June 2 honoring Mrs Chestnut on her 45th birthday. Friends and relatives gathered bringing gifts while distant relatives sent presents. A noon feast followed by well wishes closed the surprise event.
