The nation reports idle iron workers in Pittsburgh, immigrant Esquimaux to the fair, a $1500 stamp find in Philadelphia, and varied notes from Kansas to Denmark. Observations span weather, transportation, crime, politics, and public works, with a mix of curiosities and warnings.
In Paducah Kentucky on July 12 a mob of about 300 armed Black residents gathered near the jail after a Negro suspect in a recent assault was arrested. The mayor requested help from the governor as police armed citizens and militia faced gunfire from both sides. Elmer Edwards, a militia member, was mortally wounded. several others including Black suspects were wounded or jailed as crowds remained in the streets.
July reports from multiple towns show armed citizens ready to aid strikers. Two thousand volunteers with Springfield rifles prepared after a mass meeting as Thirteenth Regiment departs for Lewiston and local guards move toward Mt Gretna.
