Harve Ward Drowned While Crossing Flooded Stream
Harve Ward, a well known local citizen born 1869, was drowned when the buggy he rode with Winklepleck toppled into a swollen river after a bridge gave way. Ward’s body was recovered near the scene after a night search. his wife and four children survive along with four sisters. Ward was a farmer and longtime member of the United Brethren church. Deadly flood and wreckage washed away the buggy and horse, while rescue teams continued to search the area until the river receded.

Death of Acred Hattery Stirs Eagleville Community
Acren Hattery aged 82 died at his home five miles southwest of the city last Tuesday after a stroke and complications. He moved from Ohio forty years ago, worked as a farmer and carpenter, and is survived by his wife and ten children. Funeral held at United Brethren church in Eaglesville yesterday at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Perry Key officiated. Burial in Eaglesville cemetery. Mr and Mrs J E Marks and daughter Frances visited the area this week after staying with A M Keck and friends in Salem.

Amanda Hannah of Elnora dies at 62 in Elnora home
Mrs. Amanda Hannah widow of William Hannah of Elnora died at her home in Elnora Thursday night at age sixty two. She was born in Martin county and lived in Elmore township. She belonged to the Elnora Christian Church and is survived by her husband two children a stepson a sister two brothers and several relatives. Burial followed at Elnora Cemetery after funeral conducted by Rev. C. H. Buchanan.

Severe storm floods farms and towns in southern Illinois and Indiana
A devastating storm swept through the region damaging farms, buildings, and crops. Trees were uprooted near town, homes struck by lightning, and several structures including a bakery, blacksmith shop, and millinery store sustained water intrusion. Dozens of livestock perished and power and telegraph lines were knocked out.

Eleanor Hastings dies at age nine from inflammatory heart disease after weeks of rheumatic illness. She had a sunny disposition and was a granddaughter of J. H. Garten. Survived by parents and brothers Ralph and John Hastings. Funeral at 9:30 from the residence, Rev. W. S. Rader officiating. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery. many from Odon attended.

Longtime residents celebrate 66th wedding anniversary
Mr and Mrs Burrell, two of the community's best known residents, marked sixty six years of marriage with a homecoming. Their children and many grandchildren gathered on North Spring Street for a large dinner and celebration. The couple, who moved to Oden during the Civil War’s final year, remain active and hopeful for the years ahead.

Bedford Concert Band Draws Big Crowds in 4th Annual Event
A large crowd gathered in an amphitheater setting to hear the Bedford band directed by Prof. W. S. Coffey. Rain threatened, but 160 musicians performed before thousands, with tickets selling fast and over 500 cars in the grounds. The Sommers family plans a reunion in Odon on August 26 at City Park with about 100 out-of-town guests expected.

Washington Girl Drowns After Fourth of July Picnic
A July Fourth picnic at White River near Petersburg ended when a boat carrying Lloyd Burch Eddie Harris and six Washington girls struck a railroad pier and capsized. Marguerite Steinle Mildred Brown Ruth Allen and Elizabeth Hyatt were involved with two girls swept away. Rescue attempts saved Steinle and Allen briefly while Allen disappeared under the river. Burch and Harris were pulled from the water and taken for care. The Steinle and Allen bodies were recovered. Allen was buried in Brownstown after funeral services.

Uninsured calf among barn losses after fire
A fire destroyed a barn causing injury to a cow and calf while two cows escaped. The owner notes substantial stock was housed in the barn and all but the two cows and calf escaped. The loss is covered by insurance.
