The 1912 tax records show Washington township rising from 2.12 to 2.26 per hundred, a 26 cent increase. Madison township and Odon escape the rise due to postponement of certain road bond payments. Tax collectors note Caiiess County receipts exceed 66 400 for the year.
The county shows year ending December 31 1912 receipts of 721121.87 and disbursements of 64542.76 with a balance of 75296.31. The county revenue fund balance stands at 1298.01 with receipts 81488.78 and disbursements 77190.77.
Almanac lists five eclipses including a total solar eclipse on March 22 and several partial events. Partial views occur in the United States and Atlantic regions with visibility details varying by location.
W F Flint of Vincennes purchased W Collins general store at the Spring and Main corner. Odon Realty Co. arranged the sale and Collins sells his stock to Flint and moves to Canada with land in Canada. Flint plans a large department store. the old store is closed to invoice.
Arthur H. Greenwood of Washington has been appointed county attorney of Daviess County by the board of county commissioners. The salary is 50 a year. Greenwood succeeds himself with no other applicants. The board met in its January term as Thomas H. Arvin was elected secretary and James A. Sause presided. Arvin succeeds Richard McDonald as a new board member, a Democrat farmer from Reeve township, elected in November.
An appellate court last week ruled a savings company contract forbidding early mortgage payment is against public policy and void. The decision emphasizes borrower rights to pay off debt ahead of schedule despite contract terms.
The county board appointed one superintendent per road division for 1913. Appointees must post bonds and earn twenty cents an hour for actual work. District 2 Thomas H. Sen Ogden near Scotland sells a large farm and relocates to a 1023 acre Arkansas plantation. He will move immediately after today’s sale to assume control while his family stays until spring. The transaction was brokered by the Odon Realty Co.
Samuel Garrett Bean died of spinal trouble Sunday at 1 a.m. He was the sixteen months old son of Otto and Fla Bean of Elnora. Funeral services were held at the residence Monday at 10 a.m. Rev. Ben Bean conducted the service. Burial followed at Elnora.
County fair managers push a legislative bill to levy one cent per hundred dollars to fund county exhibitions. In Daviess county the tax would raise about $1,500 annually. Democrat.
The Citizens Bank of Elnora elected officers for the coming year at its annual meeting held Tuesday. Samuel Shufflebarger was named president, Aaron Hitchcock vice president, Harry Hitchcock cashier, H. H. Beever assistant cashier, and Myrtle Winklepteck bookkeeper. The state bank carries $19,000 in capital stock and boasts wealth of around 250,000.
Church reports two good meetings last Sunday and urges attendance at Bible school and both morning and evening services next Sunday. Worship led by Rev. Allen C. Trusty with preaching including a call to spiritual growth and participation.
Woman's Day services will be held at the U B church Sunday evening January 1 with a program of recitation and music. Rev F Bean, a returned missionary from China, will give the address. Everyone is invited. A business education advertisement from Jno B Stotts offers placement in a top college at reduced cost.
Local shop announces its annual invoice will be issued once repairs are underway. A batch of discounted items is offered soon, with customers urged to come in and see what is available.
The county trustees filed annual reports with Auditor Lew Core. Madison Township began with 24,583.32, received 9,070.22 in 1912, final balance 5,244.77. Bogard 5,083.61 start, 18,581.91 receipts, final 8,168.11. Steele 3,442.76 start, 14,561.41 receipts, final 3,383.48. Harrison receipts 10,677.93, warrants 7,465.01 redeemed, end balance 3,212. Vanderbilt Washington started 2012 with 12,719.50, 40,451.85 receipts, 25,175.42 disbursements, end 15,276.33.
