Heavy ice caused extensive damage in Cincinnati harbor with barges broken and logs drifting toward Coney Island. Ohio gorge risks noted as waters rise. Evansville Port reports ice and boats tied up. Tarascon refloated on Green River. Wabash and Ohio rivers expected to flood lowlands. Pittsburgh reports massive ice gorge in Allegheny region.

New York State labor department bulletin shows a rise in union membership for the quarter ending October 1. By end of September 2,557 unions were registered, up 225 from six months earlier, with total membership 395,736, an increase of 38,634. New York City added 24,361 members, 11.3 percent, led by building and transport trades while clothing trades declined by 4,065.
The record shows farm products valued at 509,051 dollars. Maintenance costs, including lawns, flower gardens, transportation, and teams, totaled 92,403 dollars.
Secretary Root sent to Congress a supplemental estimate of 2,526,100 for defending U S insular possessions including Porto Rico Hawaii Guam and the Philippines. Ruth Miller Hoar wife of Massachusetts Senator Hoar died suddenly Thursday night at her Washington home from angina pectoris. The Senator, the family physician and Miss Patterson were present. She had been in poor health for some time and the shock affected the family. The body will be taken to Worcester for burial and no funeral will be held in Washington. She was born Ruth A. Miller and was the senator's second wife.
The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in the W. S. Gray & Co. case that laborers may strike and persuade others to strike and use lawful means to win their cause. It held Judge Cray overstepped when restraining defendants from entering premises and enjoining interference with the plaintiffs’ business.
Police charged George Schacter and others after a family dinner soup was poisoned. Sebirgefer became unconscious and nearly died, and the father’s head was torn by a shot misfire during a Christmas scene in London Tennessee.
In a head on collision during a blizzard two Pere Marquette trains on the east bound and west bound routes collided at speed. The wreck left twenty two dead and thirty eight injured as engines split and car debris scattered across the right of way. Authorities report speeds of about sixty miles an hour west bound and forty east bound as the crash tore through the train formations. Workmen recovered bodies from under wreckage as steam vents released from boilers.
New York Dec 28 Mr Bunau Varilla minister of Panama to the United States stated Sunday that Panama would assume a portion of its external debts in proportion to its population. Preparatory to leaving for Australia John Alexander Dowie bade farewell to his Chicago adherents at a meeting in the Auditorium where standing room was at a premium after an all night Zion City watch. Dowie plans to depart New Orleans for resins via the lake.
General Bates notes overcrowded guard houses and informs that many prisoners were released when not detrimental to discipline. He suggests sending those with year or longer sentences to military prisons. The department roster shows 172 officers and 2,764 enlisted. In the reporting period 357 enlisted were tried by general court martial, up 2 from last year. 357 were convicted.
Dr. Alexander Graham Bell arrived in Genoa to convey the remains of James Smithson to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D. C. The transfer follows concerns that an English cemetery site near Genoa is unsafe for the founder's grave. Bell departed Italy with the remains after discussions in scientific circles about final burial in the capital.
A violent wind storm struck Washington on Friday afternoon causing extensive damage and possible fatalities. A five story building of Cincinnati Heating Co. collapsed, debris trapped workers, and a $20,000 loss plus downed lines were reported. The Purdue wreck report blames lack of system and calls for new laws to place a baggage car and make dereliction of duty manslaughter.
A cablegram from Secretary Shaw reports the resignation of Alonzo Cruzen as Porto Rico customs collector. It is believed W N Eliott of Indiana may succeed him, with Regie H Post of New York as auditor. President Roosevelt may allow Senator Beveridge to appoint the new collector.
Fort Wayne Kuhns, now imprisoned in Ohio State Penitentiary Williams Campauatciastown since 1890, hires Fort Wayne attorney G W Loutit to appeal to the Ohio circuit court under a statute granting appeal at any time. He claims trial evidence was insufficient for conviction.
Frank Burnett, a young man from Muncie Indiana, confessed to burglarizing the Wachtel department store for several hundred dollars worth of goods. He was offered a choice between long prison terms or enlisting in the regular United States Army and chose to join the Army.
A fragmentary report notes Perry Heath plans a six story modern hotel in Muncie with his brother. The project aims to surpass local hotels in size and cost though exact figures and dates are unclear.
Huel J. McGowan of the Cincinnati and Indianapolis practice system teaches Thursday night after six months abroad with Mrs. McGowan. He returns to spend Christmas with his children in Indianapolis. He has recovered from recent health issues and death rumors.
Ten Bluffton high school students, leaders of the U S B Society, faced circuit court on charges of assault and battery for hazing Ralph McBride Norton Vollmar and John Brinnelman after an April initiation. A westbound Glover Leaf passenger train collided with a Pan Handle freight engine at a Kekome crossing injuring eleven passengers. The train carried about 120 passengers and two cars derailed. Blizzard weather hits western Indiana with a 31 degree drop from Friday afternoon to night causing crippled telephone service and snow and wind across Brazil Clinton Sullivan Paris and nearby points.
In Muncie Indiana on December 24 a 44 year old man William Crozier of Eaton wounded by grief over his daughter’s death. He reportedly killed himself in a final act after four prior attempts in the past week. Crozier believed he faced hellish torture and was driven by a persistent delusion.
