History Club Recalls Early Homes and Town Names

The History Club session features a letter from Capt. Z W Garten in Florida noting no rain since his arrival. It recounts Clarksburg's first frame house by John Long in 1840 and James Garten's 1840 frame house in Madison Twp. The prairie house south of Odon, built by John Hastings, later rolled to town, with its site under dispute to be settled next meeting. A 1881 tale recounts Odell and Laughlin discussions on renaming the town and post office, ending with the compromise name Odon in honor of Odell and Don for Jo Fan Laughlin.
