New Christian Church Opened With Daylong Dedication

The New Christian church at Race and Indianapolis avenues opens Sunday with an all day program led by W. Cauble of Indianapolis. The 800 seat building features a large interior, basement dining, and a five minute walk tour for visitors. An evening concert and address by Rev. Cauble close the day, followed by a Monday night evangelistic series by Rev. L. H. Graham and Rev. Chas. Coleman.

Mrs Hannah Baldwin Dies After Short Illness

Mrs Hannah Baldwin of 207 East Main Street Washington died last Sunday morning at the county hospital following a surgical operation. Born April 9 1867 near Newberry Greene County she lived in Washington since childhood. She married Ross Baldwin April 25 1908 and is survived by her husband one sister and two brothers with aunt Mrs T B Rankin among relatives.

Thieves Break Into Ledzer Ledgerwood Grocery

Thieves broke into Ledzer Ledgerwood Bros. on South Spring Street early Monday. They pried a rear window, took about twenty three dollars from the cash register and groceries including flour syrup meat and tobacco. Bloodhounds traced a trail to a home in east Odon. no arrests made.

Inconsistency Defined by Town Discussion

A town group debated the meaning of inconsistency and chose a respected man to define it. He said it means not in harmony or not compatible, citing a man leaving Rexall store in a $4 suit and smoking a Black and White cigar as inconsistent. Further discussion to continue next week.

Insurance scam rings in Indiana manager exposed

An impostor claiming to be the Indiana manager of United States Annuity and Life Insurance Co of Chicago bilked several locals by selling false policies with escalating returns. He used forged stationery, forged notes, and promises of policy forwarding, but premiums weren’t repaid and policies never issued. The alleged ringleader, Geo W Mitchell from Indianapolis, faced arrest on charges after affidavits were filed in Washington and sent to Martin County sheriff.

Auto Crash Hurts Two Men West of Town

Last Saturday a livery car driven by James Borders plunged into an eight foot ditch west of Elmora road injuring Jen Spurgeon and James Borders. Spurgeon suffered cracked ribs while Borders was shaken. Dense fog hindered steering as the vehicle veered off after a town turn. The men, who were en route to collect companions from Washington, left the wreck and walked back to town.

Local Farmer Severely Cuts Left Hand Practically Near Severed

Luther Boyd, a well known farmer two miles north of town, suffered a deep cut to his left hand while cutting kindling last Tuesday evening. The gash, about three inches long, was behind the thumb and index finger and nearly severed the thumb and finger. Dr. J E Bowman treated the wound.

Poles for New Power Line Arrive From British Columbia

Indiana Power and Water Co. received three carloads of fir poles 35 feet long with six inch tops from British Columbia for the Qodon to Elnora line. Erection will start at once and motors for local businesses are expected this week for immediate installation. A. C. Keene is in town returning Tuesday. Two cars of blocks for the Odon Fertilizer Co. plant arrived as construction of the plant proceeds.

Knights of Pythias Elect County Officers at Plainville Meeting

At the annual gathering of four Daviess county lodges in Plainville more than 150 members attended. George W. Henderson of Plainville was elected president. other officers include Robert Denny as vice president and Earl McCafferty as secretary-treasurer. The new two story Plainville lodge house was dedicated with Rev. Allen C. Trusty as speaker.
