Aunt Annie Woodruff Dies. Longtime Burns City Resident

Mrs. John Woodruff known as Aunt Annie, aged well over 80, passed away at home west of the city last Sunday from general debility. Born in Tennessee December 1, 1828, she was among Indiana’s early settlers in Martin County near Burns City. She married John Woodruff in 1864 and had nine children. She joined the Christian Church at Burns City around 1816 and remained active in faith throughout her life.

Burns City Couple Weds in Jeffersonville and Reception Held

Carl Bricker and Iris Woodard, both connected to families in London Kentucky and Burns City, married on Friday in Jeffersonville Indiana. A wedding dinner and reception followed at Bricker's home with friends and relatives attending. Jan 23 obituary notes John R. Lyon of the U S Navy died in Philadelphia of pneumonia after serving a year aboard the Rhode Island. He leaves a sister Carrie and a brother Everet of Loogootee and is buried at Mt Calvary.

Death of Clarence Gurbin in Chicago training camp

Clarence Corbin died last Tuesday near Chicago from pneumonia after measles. His father Thomas Corbin of near Satem Wisked brought him home and he was buried Saturday after services at the church. He was born to Mr and Mrs Burke Ketcher, Virginia, January 25. Contin. 6 on page 6.

QDON Wins Big Point Drive Over Sandborn H S

One of the season’s best crowds saw Sandborn High fall 24 to 21 at Star Theater Friday night. Sandborn showed teamwork and solid shooting but lacked speed. QDON delivered a fast set of plays and a hard fought game. Correll Barkley Overton and Gerrell led with field goals and foul goals while Barkley and Gerrell each contributed early scoring.

Fire damages home on East Main Street

Firefighters rushed to a Sunday afternoon blaze at the residence of Mrs. Zigler on East Main Street. Flames roared along the roof before a quick attack controlled the fire within ten minutes, damaging the second story and roof and soaking the interior. Property owned by A Jollif was involved.

Tragic Oncoming Trains and Curious Events End in Death

Report describes a man racing a train at a crossing, failing to beat it. He checks a gasoline tank, finds it full, pats an unfriendly bulldog, and discovers his gun loaded. A knife switch blade is touched accidentally, and the man dies. The scene also notes a purchase of rat and roach paste from Oden Drug Co.

Letters From Ft. Riley Soldier Update January 1918

A Ft. Riley correspondent writes of harsh cold conditions and dust, rigorous daily drills, and lengthy hours from Monday to Saturday. He notes meningitis cases in the camp, nose swabs for germs, and possible deployment delays due to age, with orders to France recalled because he was over 35.

Pvt W. O. Freed writes from the Philippines about guard duty on the world’s largest radio station at Canacao. He describes life aboard ships, travel to Japan and Singapore, local natives, and life in tents near Arlington and Hoboken en route to a rifle range. He notes unit changes, training, and plans to transfer as formations form for France.

Camp Joseph E Johnston Defends Against German Arrests

Captain P. Mitchell reports at Camp Joseph E Johnston Jacksonville Florida that 350 Germans were arrested overnight and the camp faced guards and rumors of arson. He notes 15 000 men for instruction, motor car division training, and plans to ship to France soon. He praises Red Cross and Y M C A aid and mentions a brave 18 year old soldier writing to his mother.
