Settlers Rally Against Railroad Land Claim Fight
In Spokane Washington forty four settlers fled to the land office to contest a blanket claim by the Northern Pacific under the Heuland grant covering about seventy quarter sections in Pend Oreille and Stevens counties. H J Needham of St Paul represented the railroad and filed as claimant number 33. earlier filers avoid contests but may face disputes if the railroad pushes contests. Many claimants queued since June. one seventy two year old slept in line and registered as No 19.
