Death of Civil War veteran Andrew Stuffle in Eaglesville

Andrew Stuffle a Van Buren township resident and Civil War veteran died at his Eaglesville home last Monday from paralysis and debility. He was 77, born March 3 1840. married Judea Critchlow January 3 1866, with five children. survived by wife, three children and four brothers. He joined E church in 1868 then Unite Brethren in 1894. He served in Co I 65 Indiana Infantry from 1862 to 1865. Funeral Wednesday at 2 PM at the A B church Eaglesville with G A R in charge, burial in Eaglesville cemetery.

County to Form State Militia Units in Daviess

Daviess County to join state militia efforts with a formal organizer Jno Ben Stotts appointed to oversee county units. Madison township has begun organizing led by Wm Bunch, with many men ready to enlist. Drilling will start once enough are enrolled. this is state militia not a home guard. Continued on Page 5.

Roberts Retained as Pastor and Conference Assignments

Rev. E. Roberts remains pastor of the U B church for another year after the annual Indiana Conference at New Albany. The notice lists ministerial assignments for the coming year including J W Settle as Superintendent and names for each congregation such as New Albany W H Todd and Washington W W Moore among many others.

Car narrowly avoids serious injury in ditch near town

John Humerickhouse and his female companion escaped unharmed after their Maxwell slid into an eight foot ditch on the Elnora Odon road while returning from the Old Settlers Meeting. A crowd aided in pulling the car from the ditch and it was driven home.

Odon School Opens with Staff Notices and Chautauqua Trip

The Odon school opens Monday September 10 with a morning session on the first day and a note to parents to await book lists from teachers. Staff include Supt J. K. McCarter and teachers in music science history literature math and grade levels. Several local families traveled by auto to Merom Indiana to hear W J Bryan at a chautauqua event.

Old Settlers meet in Odon hailed as best yet

The 31st annual Old Settlers gathering in Odon closed with high praise for its success. Credit goes to R. J. McCallian and D. W. Hayes for leadership, while the floral hall exhibit by the M I C drew strong crowds. Parachute drops excited spectators as wind allowed, and canning demos plus daily features drew steady interest. The ocean wave breakdown temporarily delayed rides, but the midway and concessions drew money and crowds. Scouts aided safety and logistics as the big three day event ended with a quiet final morning. Continued on Page 6.

Reception for Rev Ernest Roberts and wife in Odon

A public reception at the U B church welcomed Rev Ernest Roberts and his wife back to Odon for another year, with a townwide invitation. Troop 1 Odon Boy Scouts escorted them in, and the Mendelssohn Male Quartette and Ladies Double Quartette performed. The event included talks praising the couple and a social hour.

Madison Farmer Marries After Army Exam Waiver

Elmer F. Overton of Madison township obtained a license to wed Ethel S. Howard, age 22, after passing the army physical and waiving further examination. The couple married immediately by Rev. J. Trowbridge in the county clerk’s office.

Baptist Association Closes After Successful Annual Meeting

The ninety third annual Union Baptist association closed at First Baptist church in Washington. Rev W C Tatem preached the introductory sermon. Red Cross Meeting To Organize Odon Madison Chapter

A Red Cross program at the Christian church Monday evening aims to organize a local chapter in Odon and Madison township. Citizens are urged to attend. the event features a large city orchestra, addresses, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, and a free program including readings, songs, and a finale of The Star Spangled Banner.
