Tod Sloan was badly injured when his horse Maluma slipped and fell in the Liverpool cup. Sloan suffered a head wound and facial injuries but no internal injuries were reported. The fall may end Maluma’s racing career due to a shoulder injury.
In Chicago Sule 28 two gangs of about fifty boys from Brighton Park and back of the stock yards clashed at Fortieth street and Western avenue. The melee left two boys with knife wounds to the shoulder and hip and many more battered after the Boxers swung clubs.
A plot to kill Governor Ramon Caceras of Santiago was uncovered and 25 conspirators were imprisoned. Several military officers are involved and will be tried by court martial. President Jiminez is visiting the interior as the country remains generally quiet.
In St Louis on Friday night dynamite exploded on the tracks injuring no one. The first blast occurred near Spring and Easton avenues around 4 pm, lightly damaging one car. A second blast at 10 pm badly damaged another car on the same line.
The United States Fish Commission authorizes 35500 for the Tennessee fish hatchery at Erwin. New bass pools will be added and cultivation of bass will receive special attention. The hatchery supplies fish to streams and lakes across Tennessee.
Washington July 27 dispatch reports a claim from Constantinople that the sultan of Turkey is in poor health. The telegraph message notes uncertainty in the report and references official channels for confirmation.
In Montaaly on Sunday evening King Humbert I of Italy was shot dead after a prize distribution at a gymnastic event. The assassin, Angelo Hressi of Prato Tuscany, an anarchist, was seized as the crowd reacted with anger.
Rome reports the assassination of King Humbert. premier Signor Saraceo calls a cabinet meeting, ministers to depart at dawn for Monza to address the crisis.
Havana July 29 Estes G Rathbone former director general of posts in Cuba was arrested on four charges including unlawful drawing of two 2500 orders to pay private staff and per diem improprieties. Bond set at 25000 bail. bail status debated as prison move considered by authorities amid sympathy from figures including Gen Lee.
A Cape Town dispatch reports Dever offering surrender under terms allowing followers to return home unmolested. Lord Roberts demands unconditional surrender. UK forces capture a train near Kroonstad carrying supplies and 190 Welsh Fusiliers officers and men. Gen. French takes Middleburg and Pole-Carew arrives at Drugsprait. Heavy fighting at Fouriesburg precedes its capture. Hunter’s forces suffer about 160 casualties in Reliefs Nek as Boers flee into mountain passes with stores and cattle.
Berlin reports that at Rastenberg lightning struck after the foundation stone was laid for the Roman museum, killing two. In a separate incident near Dantzig, lightning killed two more and caused several buildings to burn.
Lincoln Nebraska July 36 reports Mr Bryan is well along with his notification speech and plans. He will soon announce his itinerary for the trip to Indianapolis and return.
Syracuse dispatch notes Charles H. Duell, Commissioner of Patents, plans resignation soon to devote full time to private business. Duell currently earns a $5,000 salary and will leave public service.
The United States last fiscal year imported from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the Philippine and Samoan islands more than 60 million dollars in goods. Sugar and molasses led the totals, with Hawaii sugar valued higher per pound, and Cuba supplying the most pounds among the four sources.
A Buffalo Bill's Wild West train collision near Milwaukee Junction Detroit injures nine and kills one in a sleeping car with about 40 inmates. The backward push against an outgoing Grand Trunk freight train trapped and crushed sleeper No. 56. most victims expected to recover.
London reports Lady Randolph Churchill formerly Miss Jerome wed Lieut George Cornwallis West at St Pauls Wrights Bridge. The church was crowded with stylish women and no limit set on witnesses.
Minneapolis July 29. Chas A Towne will be withdrawn from the populist national ticket about August 5. The populist national committee will accept his resignation and replace him with Adlai E Stevenson.
Havana July 20 The decree calling the constitutional convention and providing for delegate elections meets with universal approval from the Cuban press.
Captain John Little of the subsistence department died of typhoid fever at Governors Island. He married a niece of the late General Sherman. General Brooke informed the War Department in New York.
A general election is set for next Thursday in North Carolina with a vote on amending the constitution to limit the electoral franchise.
In Ft Worth a frame Exchange hotel burned on July 30. Tom Gibbons toppled a lamp starting the fire and died. Ruby Wentdling and an unknown man were badly burned. Loss estimated at 5,000 dollars.
In Versailles Indiana Sheriff Ebel awoke to a jailyard disturbance as would be escapees sought Watts and Red Elder. He fired five shots at the fleeing men near the jail and pursued toward Osgood after reloading. A prior escape by an Os good inmate is noted as a possible mission behind the attempt.
George Kress files an affidavit accusing Edgar Dick of drunkenness. Later Harvey Lawson knocks Dick down and violently kicks him as he exits a justice's office. Attorney A G Cavins and George Musgrave are assaulted while protecting their clients. Dick denies ever drinking.
R H Cowan of Neely Printing Co in Muncie Indiana issues a card denouncing Bristow's statements. He says records do not prove a legitimate sale of Neely to Bristow and that Cuban government printing bills were not paid twice. He cites a clerical error by Rathbone who paid one bill of 163 dollars, later corrected.
Samuel Baker, 76, longtime Elkhart county resident, died in Wabash after his wife’s death three months earlier. Before dying he wished to be moved to the room and bed where his wife died, and he was laid in the same bed at the old home, passing away there.
In Muncie Indiana on Thursday Henry Overmeyer, 60, shot himself with three bullets in the brain. Doctors report wounds are healing, nourishment being taken, and no pain or pus formation, suggesting a good chance of recovery.
The Eastern Indiana circuit opener at Muncie saw Wild Tartar fall and roll over rider James Carver who may die. Miss Dad also fell injuring Willis Driver of Kankakee seriously. Carey Bronnenburg on Ups-and-Downs was only slightly hurt.

Logansport Indiana July 29 C Taylor of Walton took a dose of morphine in a personal crisis caused by ill health. His brother George attempted suicide a year ago according to the report.
Elwood Indiana July 29 John Young a well known citizen and old soldier is in a serious condition at his home in the city. Five days ago he began hiccoughing and cannot stop. He has grown so weak that he cannot lift his head.
In Fowler Indiana July 19 a man died after a large supper following treatment for a stomach ailment. Coroner inquest found strychnine in stomach and contents. Star Cox and Mrs Win Lyda jailed without bail after a preliminary trial. Cox is a Tennessee native who lived with Lyda for years.
A keg of powder exploded after youths opened it to share the contents. John Mattey died from burns, while John Scabber and James Ambrose were near death. Rolly Forrister and a girl escaped injury as bystanders quickly helped. Ages ranged from 15 to 19.
The heirs of the late Alfred Williams of Bogard township discover a can with 300 in gold buried in a granary on the Williams farm. The money, placed there by Mr. Williams before his death, was hidden deep in the wheat. No note or evidence explains when or why it was buried.
Coroner Hollingsworth in Princeton Indiana found Carrie Holdsecraper died by accidental drowning in a pond near Somerville. No evidence of foul play emerged though one shoe is missing casting doubt on the ruling. The death appears not due to self harm according to the coroner.
An order for 110000 garments to be made up at once arrived at Jeffersonville quartermasters depot. The items are men’s apparel and a 1200 woman workforce will produce them. Finished goods will be shipped by fast freight to Seattle and then to the Orient.
Corne lius S. Myers of Pleasant Plain has delivered government mails between his town and Huntington for 25 years. He has traveled 170000 miles during that service. A signed statement by longtime county officials endorses his work and he regards it as a unique piece of property.
A Pheasant club is being organized in this county Rochester Ind July 29. The group plans to stock the county with pheasants and offers a $50 reward for the conviction of anyone who kills a pheasant during five years when such killing is illegal.
