A man recalls a suburban train ride where a beautiful woman sits beside him. A misplaced pocketbook leads to fear and mistaken theft, ending with a confession that his heart was the true pocket he kept. The tale closes with a humorous twist on romance and misread signals.
The story follows Ralph Kirby, a convicted man with a solid record, who deserts a prison camp during a cyclone storm. He eludes armed guards, steals a dead fellow inmate’s clothes, hides in a wrecked village, and uses a grave ruse to escape detection as rescue parties hunt him. He eventually reaches a station as a train nears, fleeing with the crowd. Ralph Wilby, now a sheep raiser in Australia, is warned the crime’s confessor has surfaced, but he remains disengaged from the chase.
Miss Bessie Shaffer, longtime Odon resident and 1907 Odon High School graduate, married Levi Mullins this Sunday at the officiating minister’s home. The couple, who plan to farm near Brookville, were joined after a supper hosted at a Mullins brother’s home. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs Dacy Shaffer, taught school in the area before moving to Franklin County.
East of Raglesville Starlin Woodruff suffered a severe cold. Local residents like Louis Pate Wim Byrer and Henry Sefrt are noted ill or visiting. Republicans of precinct No 2 organized delegates for state and county conventions. Residents report a mild March with bloom and visiting kin from nearby towns and counties. A new doctor arrives in Eaglesville from Indianapolis.
Observers note a red moon reddened during nights and at zenith it casts no shadow despite clear skies. Some attribute the effect to Halley’s comet tail, a theory shared by many witnesses.
John F. Wallingford and Edith I. Bunch were married Sunday at the Wood home in Washington. The ceremony was conducted by Rev J A White of the First U B church and followed by an elaborate dinner. Guests included Mr and Mrs Chas Breden and daughter Helen, Mr and Mrs Elmer Bunch, and Mr and Mrs Will Bunch. The couple will reside with Wesingford’s parents near Odon for the summer.
