Alexandria’s dwindling Jewish community clings to memory
In Alexandria, Egypt, fewer than 50 Jews remain, with elders like Lina Mattatia keeping traditions alive amid an empty synagogue and guarded grounds. The once thriving community, 50,000 strong historically, dwindled after 1948 and Suez crises, leaving only a handful in their 70s and 80s supported by a tiny faith life and occasional visits from Israel.
