PUC chief urges Senate panel on aid for elderly electric bills
Texas PUC chairman George Cowden told a Senate subcommittee there is a clear need to help elderly Texans pay electric bills. he urged that relief be a legislative welfare matter, not a PUC duty, and pressed for changes to the Public Utility Regulatory Act. He warned reducing the agency budget would limit enforcement and suggested trimming the one sixth of one percent gross receipts assessment. he also sought power to seek court receivers for noncompliant utilities and outside counsel.

Pettit cited five million Spanish English voter registration applications this year and warned federal takeover remains a threat while urging more funding for primaries as inflation raises costs. he noted primaries this year cost 2.97 million dollars, just 30 thousand under budget.
