Inflation program promises gradual decline in six months
Consumer prices rose 0.5 percent in July and 0.6 percent in August, below earlier peaks, while CPI shows 1993 base prices doubling from 1967. Officials warn wage and price guidelines will take time, with labor contracts negotiated years ahead and wholesale prices rising. Labor Secretary Ray Marshall predicts a gradual inflation drop in about six months. The administration seeks wage and price restraints, with mixed reactions from unions and business leaders.
