Pope thanks supporters at 20th papal anniversary Mass
Pope John Paul II reflected on 20 years as pope in St. Peter's Square. About 75,000 worshippers attended the Mass while thousands from Poland and elsewhere joined the celebration. He asked himself if he served diligently and sought truth, then thanked the faithful for their support. Cardinal Glemp said the pope once considered resigning in 1981 to defend Poland’s freedom. The ceremony highlighted the pope's fragility yet strong resolve as he spoke of truth and guidance.
