Historic cone found on Woodlawn playground in Willow Grove
In Willow Grove Pennsylvania a small open ended earthenware cone from 1839 the first U S Geological Survey was found buried three feet underground during ground breaking on the Woodlawn Elementary School playground. Surveyor Walter Payne of the Philadelphia Electric Co said the marker was pinpointed from old records and modern instruments. Local historian Elizabeth Green noted the site had been a campsite for the 1839 survey crew.
